UNM Volunteer Birth Companion Program

Welcome to the Birth Companion Program at UNMH

In the vibrant year of 2018, the UNM Birth Companion Program emerged into existence, driven by the passion of two UNM providers—a doctor and a midwife—alongside the invaluable contributions of two community doulas. This exceptional volunteer initiative extends its arms to all families birthing at the University of New Mexico Hospital, offering the gift of free birth companionship.

At the core of our mission is the belief that every family deserves exceptional emotional, mental, and physical support as they welcome a new member into the world. Our birth justice-focused program is committed to providing care that is not only respectful but also deeply compassionate and entirely non-judgmental.

Recognizing the rich diversity in people and their unique reproductive choices and experiences, we strive to create a space where everyone feels acknowledged and supported. Through our dedicated efforts, we aim to enhance birth experiences and bridge the gap in health disparities within maternity care.

UNM Hospital, attuned to the transformative power of a support person in the delivery room, champions the cause. The UNM Birth Companion Program stands tall, offering free labor and birth support to those who choose to birth at UNMH. Whether certified doulas or individuals with specialized training, our birth companions are equipped to provide emotional and physical support during labor, offering a spectrum of services akin to the finest doulas.

Join us on this incredible journey where every birth is celebrated, every choice respected, and where the magic of childbirth is elevated to new heights!

Are you ready to embark on a journey of making a meaningful impact in our community? If so, we've got an exciting opportunity waiting just for you!

Welcome to the UNM Birth Companion Program, where we take volunteering to a whole new level. Our program offers an extensive and comprehensive FREE training that goes beyond just birthing support techniques. We dive into topics like trauma-informed care, inclusion, addressing substance abuse in the birth setting, and so much more.

Join our vibrant community of individuals who share a common belief in the significance of birth justice. At UNM, we hold the conviction that everyone deserves a positive birth experience, irrespective of their birth or reproductive choices.

If you're passionate about making a difference and ready to contribute to the well-being of others, we eagerly await your presence. Let's work together to create positive and empowering birth experiences for all!
