Food for Greater Elgin (FFGE) is a collaborative, non-profit organization formed to address hunger in the greater Elgin community. Since forming in January, 2011 FFGE has become one of the largest agency members of Northern Illinois Food Bank.
As a client-choice based food pantry, we are currently serving an average of 5,500 people facing hunger hardship - nearly half of whom are children - each and every month.
We use innovative approaches to address hunger, such as:
- Offering families a choice of food items rather than pre-bagged groceries. Client choice has a proven record of lower food waste and preserved dignity.
- Food is accessible through distributions five times per week including evenings and weekends, which differs from an emergency pantry situation.
- Acquiring high quality food at a lower cost. Through our partnerships and food rescue programs we are able to acquire more than $5 worth of food for as little as $1.
- Working together as a community: Many Elgin churches, businesses, schools, and social-service agencies are committed to supporting Food for Greater Elgin through funding, volunteers, and shared programs.
