Adult Education Volunteer
We are looking for college students, professionals and adult residents in the Arlington area to lead adult tutoring sessions, conversation circles, and support adults enrolled in our literacy programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES BY OPPORTUNITY
Tutor:
- Tutor currently enrolled students one-on-one in various subjects
- Be committed to a specific time slot each week, through the end of a specific term
- Communicate with their teacher to update progress
- Measure student progress
Conversation Circle Leader:
- Be committed to a specific time slot each week
- Direct the conversation during class
- Report attendance to literacy coordinator
Teaching Assistant:
- Provide help to teacher during class
- Operate copy machine and/or other technology
- Communicate with teacher about current lesson plans Interact with students
- Provide light technology troubleshooting
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED
- Must be 18+
- Must commit to minimum 6 months (Specifically for tutors and conversation circle leaders)
- Have a pleasant and friendly attitude and demeanor
- Be punctual on scheduled days, and ability to communicate any conflicts w/ program staff
- Maintain positive relationships with participants, other volunteers and program staff
- Ability to communicate well with others
- Lots of patience
- Passion for lifelong learning and commitment to helping a person grow
- Previous tutoring experience is not necessary
- Some undergraduate experience or higher
TIME/COMMITMENT
Hours are flexible but must commit to 6 months of regular meeting/tutoring sessions.
(Teaching Assistants do not require 6 months of commitment)
