  1. What support will I get as a volunteer?

Every volunteer is supported by a team leader for their role, and you’ll also have the contact details for our Volunteers Coordinator. We’ll help you settle in, provide any role-specific training, and are always happy to answer questions or help with any issues while you volunteer with us.

Plus, our volunteer app MyImpact has helpful resources and guidance so you can access support easily.

  1. Do you reimburse travel expenses?

We usually don’t reimburse travel, but if getting here would stop you from volunteering regularly, let us know—we may be able to offer help with this.

  1. Will volunteering affect by social security benefits?

Good news! You can volunteer for as many hours as you like without it affecting your benefits, as long as you continue to meet the rules for the benefit you’re claiming.

It’s a good idea to let the Benefits Agency know about your volunteering, just so they’re aware. If you’re unsure about your specific situation, you can also chat with your benefits advisor for peace of mind.

  1. Are there any age restrictions?

Volunteers must be over 18 years old. There might be circumstances where volunteers under 18 might be able to take part. Please contact us to discuss.

  1. Can I volunteer if I have a criminal record?

Having unspent criminal convictions or cautions doesn’t necessarily prevent you from volunteering, but it would be important to declare these as part of the application process. This ensures you and Open Hands can have an open discussion to see what, if any, support would be needed and whether these can be met as part of the role.

  1. Can I volunteer if I have a disability or accessibility needs?

Absolutely! We’re committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion, and all volunteers are treated fairly, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, race, or background.

If you have any health conditions or additional needs, please let us know during the application process. This helps us have an open conversation about any support you might need and how we can make your volunteering experience a positive one.
