Dog Enrichment Activities - Enrichment
Here are some enrichment options for volunteers to help dogs have a good time and burn off some energy:
-
Treat Search Games
"Find it in the yard" is a classic. Scatter treats or kibble in the yard and let the dogs sniff them out. You can make it harder by hiding treats under small boxes or in piles of snow -
Mini Pools and Water Play
On hot days, fill up kiddie pools and let the dogs splash around. Some dogs love to chase floating toys or bob for tennis balls in the water. -
Tug-of-War
Use sturdy tug toys for a safe game of tug. This helps energetic dogs work out some stress and gives quieter pups a confidence boost. -
Puzzle Toys and Snuffle Mats
Stuff Kongs with peanut butter or use snuffle mats for treat-hunting indoors. Volunteers can hide treats and watch as dogs use their noses and brains to solve the puzzle. -
Basic Training and Trick Sessions
Volunteers can spend time teaching or reinforcing basic manners like sit, down, or shake. Some dogs love learning new tricks, and it’s great mental stimulation. -
Fetch and Frisbee
A classic for a reason. Play fetch with balls or frisbees in a secure area, adjusting the game to each dog’s ability and interest. -
Nature Walks and Sniffaris
Take dogs for slow, exploratory walks where the main goal is to sniff and discover new scents instead of just burning calories. -
Bubble Chasing
Blow dog-safe bubbles and let the dogs chase and pop them. It’s silly, but plenty of dogs get a kick out of it. -
Obstacle Courses
Set up mini agility courses with cones, tunnels, or jumps made from broomsticks and buckets. Volunteer-guided obstacle time helps dogs build confidence and coordination. -
Cuddle and Quiet Time
Some dogs just want a good cuddle, brushing, or gentle petting. Volunteers can sit with them, read aloud, or give massages to help them relax.
Mix up these activities to fit each dog’s personality and energy level, and you’ll make their day a lot brighter.
