Ward volunteers provide companionship and support to patients, some of whom maybe in hospital for a long period of time.
The medical wards deal with the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients with conditions that don’t normally require an operation. Welcome patients, carers, relatives and visitors to the medical wards, which includes providing care of the elderly. Help to offer a friendly and homely environment by talking to and socialising with patients.
You can also help staff encourage eating and drinking by assisting at mealtimes (see Mealtime Assistant role). Support the ward by running errands, fetching patient notes, prescriptions, taking samples to Pathology or going to the shop for our patients.
Helping patients with the completion of Friends and Family questionnaires will provide the hospital with important feedback to maintain high its standards of patient care.
This role would suit anyone who likes to be busy, enjoys interacting with lots of different people and is a good listener or just wishing to give something back to the NHS and local community.
It may also be useful experience to anyone studying or looking to follow a career in an acute healthcare trust such as:
