HealthWise Volunteer to Teach Technology to 60+ Become a Virtual Coach!
Teach Adults 60+ How To Use Technology To Connect With Family, Friends, And Healthcare Providers. This program is virtual.
Coaches must be:

Senior Services has six major departments and a multitude of programs we offer to the seniors and caregivers in the area including the Western Tidewater Area. Our staff in the Franklin, Suffolk, and Norfolk offices work tirelessly to plan, support, and implement these programs to the benefit of the seniors and caregivers in those communities.
We are looking for volunteers who are skilled at MS Office, database management, and have experience in an office environment to join us as we build and improve the programs we offer. These positions need individuals who are able to learn quickly and are technologically savvy.
These opportunities are during our business hours of Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Seeking energetic friendly faces to take turns welcoming residents and potential residents to our Hayden Village Center Community! This volunteer would be responsible for answering phone inquiries and other light office duties. We request a minimum commitment of 5 hours per week, but once you join our Hayden Family, we are certain you'll never want to leave!
This opportunity is during our business hours of Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

Senior Companions are part of the National Senior Corps program, a federally funded, stipend-paid “friends-helping-friends” volunteer program.
Senior Companion Program (SCP) partners senior volunteers with adults living independently, who need companionship and a helping hand. In addition to paying a friendly visit, companions often perform a variety of tasks, such as shopping for groceries, writing a letter, or fixing a light meal. In some cases, the senior companion plays a vital role in the life of their client, providing a much-needed link from the community.
Senior Companion volunteers are matched with clients who live right in their own communities. The Senior Companion plays a vital role in the life of their client, helping them to remain independent and connected to the community.
Volunteers must be ages 55+ to join this program and are asked to contribute 20-40 hours per week to being a Companion.
We offer a variety of Internship opportunities for students preparing for careers in HR, Public Health Administration, Social Work, Dietetic, Communications and Marketing, Health Services, and Transportation Management.
This opportunity is during our business hours of Monday through Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.

If you are a diplomatic and skilled communicator who cares deeply about the quality of care and rights of those seniors and who reside in long-term care facilities, Senior Services can use your help!
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman program team serve as advocates, monitor quality-of-care, and ensure that resident’s rights are protected.
We ask our volunteer Ombudsman to commit to a one year period of service, with a minimum of 5 hours per week. Ombudsman serve seniors Monday through Friday during the day 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.
***As of October 2021, we have been unable to resume this volunteer program due to COVID-19. If you would like to be on our list of future Ombudsman, when nursing homes are safely able to allow outside visitors in, please email Jillian Lewis at firstname.lastname@example.org for additional information. A training date for 2022 has not yet been set***

Senior Services volunteer benefits counselors provide advice to seniors about their insurance options. Everything from filing or resolving Medicare, Medicaid, or other medical claims to answering questions about the Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits. Our volunteer Benefits Counselors are part of the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP).
Volunteers are provided training on how to counsel seniors about their insurance as well as specific training courses on the information we provide to seniors.
At the end of the training all benefit counselors become certified benefit counselors by passing the comprehensive test. After you become certified, you will set up meetings with seniors and their caregivers to guide them and answer their questions.
Beginning in January of 2022, we will be accepting applications for 2022 open enrollment counselors.
We ask volunteers to commit to a one year period, with a minimum of 5 hours per week to take place Monday - Friday between 9:00 am - 4:30 pm.
Volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels pick up meals in coolers and bags from our local supply center deliver the meals to one (or multiple) Wellness Centers. Seniors come together at the Wellness Centers for socialization and nutrition. Volunteers are welcome to visit with the seniors at the center after delivering the meals to the Wellness staff.
Our volunteer drivers serve Monday through Friday on days of their choice from 10:30 am -12:30 pm.
We are looking for individuals who can commit to volunteering at least once a week to delivering meals to Wellness Centers.

Senior Services is a Meals on Wheels member organization providing meals to seniors who are isolated and would not be provided for without these meals.
Comfort Call volunteers make calls to the home-bound seniors who receive Meals on Wheels to check on their well-being and health. They ensure seniors are receiving all scheduled meal deliveries and ask for the seniors to provide feedback on their experience.
Volunteers can sign up to call 10 – 25 seniors a week and each call ranges between 2-10+ minutes depending on the senior’s social engagement and availability. Calls can be made to seniors Monday through Saturday between 9:30 am – 6:00 pm.

Wellness classes are scheduled in 6 to 10 week sessions around the community for seniors. These evidence based classes support seniors in aging well and living healthy lives independently. While some classes include light exercises, most are focused on providing seniors education about wellness.
Volunteer Class Leaders may choose to schedule their own classes and recruit seniors to sign up or have the Wellness Coordinator at Senior Services schedule the classes for them at local wellness centers.
We have five classes volunteers can become leaders for: Bingocize, Matter of Balance, Chronic Disease Self-Management, Chronic Pain Self-Management, and Diabetes Self-Management. You can learn more about these classes online at SSSEVA Wellness Classes
We ask volunteers to commit to teaching at least 1 class (each class is a 6-10 week commitment) each year. These classes can be scheduled Monday-Friday 10:00 am-4:00 pm.
