Behavior Department Enrichment Volunteer - Dogs

Position for anyone 13 years and older.  13-15 years old needs to volunteer with an adult.  16 years and older can volunteer on their own. 


Behavior Department Enrichment Volunteers will provide support to the animal behavior department by making and handing out enrichment to the animals. This is an animal handling position.  We would need a volunteer to arrive in the mornings and evenings to distribute enrichment already made enrichment and create new enrichment for the following shift.  

 

Objective

Assist the Wisconsin Humane Society behavior department staff by making and handing out enrichment to dogs and puppies. 

 

Open Shifts:

  • Tuesdays 7:30am-9:30am
  • Wednesdays - 7:30am-9:30am
  • Sundays - 3pm-5pm

 

Duties - Making enrichment: 

  • Kongs  
  • Paper towel tubes  
  • Peanut butter frisbees  
  • Frozen ice bowls  
  • Frozen ice cubes  
  • Diet specific frozen treats when needed 
  • Cut up hot dogs

Additional Duties:

  • Distributing enrichment items to dogs in lodging and adoption. 
  • Report any medical or behavioral concerns to staff using FYI slips.
  • Track if each dog engaged with their enrichment item and what the item was .

Training:

  • MKE Campus Volunteer Handbook.
  • Watch Online Dog Handling Training video.
  • Attend hands-on animal training with behavior staff.
  • Shadow session with a volunteer trainer.
