PETS FOR LIFE – OUTREACH VOLUNTEER- Position for anyone 18 years and older

About Pets for Life (staff office is located at the Spay Neuter Clinic)       

The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Pets for Life program (PFL) reaches animals and families in underserved, Milwaukee neighborhoods with little to no access to pet care resources. We build a consistent community presence and relationships through door-to-door outreach and remove barriers like transportation and costs so families can provide important care to the animals they love.

Volunteer outreach opportunity, responsibilities, and commitment:

• Door-to-door outreach
  • Work with outreach staff and volunteers to build relationships with community members though door-to-door outreach
  • Share information and answer community member’s questions about spay and neuter, vaccinations and pet wellness care
  • Promote upcoming Pets for Life program services to the community
  • The commitment for this position is at least one four-hour shift per month for a minimum of six months.  Outreach opportunities are typically available Tuesday through Saturday each week.

Qualifications

• All volunteers must have an open mind and positive attitude. 
• The most important qualities we’re looking for are an interest in people, a nonjudgmental approach, and ability to build relationships. 
• Volunteers need to possess strong communication skills, the ability to work without direct supervision, and use good judgment. 
• This position can sometimes be emotionally challenging since some of the families we serve and their animals live in less-than-ideal situations. We build relationships and connect families with resources for their pets; we don’t remove animals from their homes.
• Both roles will be outdoors in the Pets for Life focus community and require standing and walking for four hours or more. Volunteers must be comfortable and able to with that physical requirement.
• An understanding and/or openness to learn about systemic poverty and the barriers that it creates.

Onboarding process

• Shadow outreach
• Dog animal handling and cat animal handling training
• Specific position training

Commitment/Age Requirement

Minimum of a 6 month commitment required.

Must be 18 years old or older.
