The Alex is a beacon of hope for Calgary’s most vulnerable, offering healthcare, housing, and wellness programs with a patient-centered approach. With five decades of experience, we help individuals move from crisis to wellness. Our volunteers are vital to this work, bringing compassion and enhancing the quality of our services.
Group Volunteers play a very important role in complementing our existing volunteer team and truly embodying our organizations values. Whether that be by providing extra supports for meal service, putting together pride and holiday totes, or breaking a sweat as a Garden volunteer.
We look forward to collaborating and finding a meaningful opportunity for your group.

Our community meal program is the opportunity for low-income Calgarians to access high quality, nutritious meals prepared in-house by our kitchen coordinator and assistant. As a CHC Kitchen Volunteer, you will help to create and maintain our space that hosts our community members. You will help with a variety of tasks which may include any of the following: cleaning the coffee station, washing tables and dishes, helping the kitchen with chopping, cooking, plating, and serving meals and clearing tables.

Time Commitment:
Wednesday Community Lunch from 10 am - 2 pm OR
Friday Community Market & Cafe from 8 am - 12 pm
Availability: All Year Round.
Number of volunteers: Up to 5 people per shift
Program Details:
Our Community Meal Program offers access to high quality, nutritious meals prepared in-house by our chef and volunteers. The Alex CFC is first and foremost a community space. We are always working to cultivate an atmosphere of connection and belonging, using a dignified approach. Community members who attend our meals are never asked to prove their income or justify their needs. While beverages are offered in a self-service style, our meal operates like a restaurant when it comes to food service. Volunteers serve the plates to community members at their tables and clear the tables when the meal is finished.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Group Volunteers play a very important role in promoting a dignified and welcoming space for community members, maintaining high-quality standards and complementing our existing volunteer team during community meals. Groups support staff and volunteers to ensure the dining hall is clean, organized and ready for the community to share a delicious meal together. Members of a group can find themselves helping with food preparation in the kitchen, serving meals and clearing tables in the dining hall, replenishing the coffee and tea station and helping out with the Fresh & Fare Community Market & Refillery on Fridays.

"Volunteering at The Alex provides the chance to make a direct impact by serving in the kitchen, preparing meals for those in need, and by building and donating Hope Totes filled with essential items. These hands-on opportunities not only help those facing challenges but also offer a rewarding experience that fosters personal growth and a deeper connection to the community."
