General Interests

Black Achievers Group Mentor

Black Achievers is a signature program designed for Black youth — including African- and Caribbean-Canadians and other newcomers — in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). It provides opportunities to develop socially and academically with the support of Black professional mentors and role models. Group Mentors attend weekly virtual mentoring sessions to share success stories and strategies based on personal and professional experience and lead break out groups.

This is a virtual position with opportunities to attend in-person special events.

Time Commitment:

  • Minimum commitment from September to June for at least 2 hours a week. Must attend mandatory online mentorship training.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 21 years of age or older. 
  • Successful applicants to this role will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of placement/volunteering, and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering should they wish to continue.
  • Knowledge and experience of the Canadian workforce in relation to job expectations and employability skills.
  • Professionals who have current Canadian work experience in professions requiring post-secondary education for example, healthcare, communications, human resources, skilled trades, IT, engineering, education, social services etc.
  • Experience working with low-income Black Youth (ages 14-19) from diverse backgrounds an asset
  • An understanding of the barriers and challenges faced by Black Youth in culturally diverse, low-income communities.

College / University Student Placement and High School Co-op

College/University student placements in Employment Services partner with Job Skills Cousnellors, Employment Resource Consultant and other YMCA staff to support job seekers. During placement they will learn about job search strategies, case management, workshop facilitation and relationship building.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible shifts, Monday to Friday.
  • Minimum one shift per week for three months.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 15.
  • Successful applicants 18 years of age or older will need to provide a Vulnerable Sector Screening from their local police service before their first day of volunteering and every three years on the anniversary of their first day of volunteering.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Strong ability to relate with diverse people.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality; be sensitive to member’s needs.
  • Proficiency with the use of computer and office equipment.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English.

Employment Programs

Volunteers in employment programs partner with staff to support clients with their job searching. They help job seekers in the resource centre, welcome clients as they arrive, complete administrative tasks and support with the delivery of workshops.

Time Commitment:

  • Flexible shifts Monday to Friday 9AM-5PM
  • One shift per week for a minimum of three months
