Spay/Neuter Volunteer - St. Petersburg location

The goal of our Spay/Neuter volunteers is to provide high quality assistance to the Spay/Neuter (S/N) team, patients, and clients at SPCA Tampa Bay Veterinary Center (SPVC) located in St. Petersburg, FL. Our S/N Program is mission driven and dedicated to serving the community with high volume, high quality S/N surgery to help reduce pet overpopulation. 


  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to work near medical procedures
  • General knowledge and experience with animals preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow directions and act independently, with oversight from S/N staff
  • Ability to be trained continuously
  • Have a high level of attention to detail
  • Medical knowledge preferred
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal stress
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Have good manual dexterity
  • Ability to communicate and work well with the public, staff and other volunteers
  • Pay a nonrefundable amount of $10 for volunteer gear


  • Positively represent SPVC’s mission and beliefs at all times
  • Ability to answer questions or refer to the appropriate resource concerning both SPCA Tampa Bay shelter and SPVC
  • Clean according to protocol, Shor-Line cages and large dog runs
  • Assist with laundry and trash
  • Sweep and mop S/N area
  • Wipe down all surfaces
  • Clean and organize surgical instruments
  • Clean and cut new drapes
  • Wrap surgical packs
  • Clean endotracheal tubes
  • Open packs/suture/blade/gloves for S/N Veterinarian during surgery
  • Walk dogs
  • Assist in lifting/moving sedated patients
  • Assist recovery nurse with nail trims and ear cleanings


  • Complete telephone meet and greet with Volunteer Program Manager

  • Complete onsite meeting with Hospital Manager

  • Complete onsite training's with the S/N team

Physical Demands:          

  • Ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds

  • Walk and stand for prolonged periods of time

Time Commitment:

  • 1 consistent shift per week
  • Tuesday-Friday: 12:00-4:00 pm or 1:00-5:00 pm
