Programmatic - Reading Tutors

The San José Public Library is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be Reading Tutors for our Reading Partners Program. You will provide one-on-one reading support to K-4th grade students, helping them develop literacy skills and confidence through engaging discussions and skill introduction. We offer training and onboarding sessions. All tutoring sessions will be in-person sessions at Seven Trees Branch Library or Hillview Branch Library. Join us in making a difference in these children's literacy journeys!

Minimum Requirements 

  • Must pass a background check and clearance requirements.
  • Commit to two tutoring sessions per week, a total of 2.5 hours weekly 

Responsibilities 

  • Conduct one-on-one reading sessions for students in grades 1 to 4 using the Reading Partners curriculum.
  • Attend all scheduled sessions consistently, including two meetings of one hour each per week.
  • Monitor and track student progress.
  • Build a positive relationship with your assigned student to create a supportive environment.

Weekly Schedule 

  • Days: Tuesdays & Thursdays
  • Times: 3:30 - 5:15 PM

  • Spring: January 20 - April 30, 2026

 

Qualifications Required

  • Age Must be at least 15+
  • Oral and written communication skills in English Must be at least Medium
