Group Greet Ambassador

For ages 18 and older

Purpose and Goals:

Schools are returning in droves to the Michigan Science Center. We are looking for people who are available on weekday mornings to help greet, organize and speech school groups as they enter the museum. Group Greeting Ambassadors must have availability during open hours from Tuesday - Sunday in order to take up this role.  We expect volunteers to have a commitment of at least 5 hours a month to maintain their volunteering role at the Michigan Science Center. 

What will I do as a group greeting ambassador?

  • Maintain a friendly demeanor with school visitors as the enter the museum
  • Help speech and navigate students as they exit their buses
  • Help student visitors understand their days schedule and important locations for success
  • Keep accurate count of students and chaperones entering the building

What qualifications do I need?

  • Likes working with kids
  • Public speaking skills
  • Ability to lead large groups of students
  • Ability to effectively communicate to staff, volunteers and student groups

Physical Requirements: 

  • Able to enter a school bus
  • Able to speak loudly to a group of people consistently
  • Able to quickly guide large groups
  • Able to lift up to 20 lbs

Theatre Ambassador

Purpose and Goals:

Our Theatre Ambassadors are personable and outgoing people, these people will help ticket our theatres, speech crowds before any showings and help run our daily operations in our theatres. Our Theatre Ambassadors will have a passion for film and theatre technology, and be able to create a world-class experience for guests to the Michigan Science Center, volunteers must have availability during open hours from Tuesday - Sunday in order to take up this role.  We expect volunteers to have a commitment of at least 5 hours a month to maintain their volunteering role at the Michigan Science Center. 

What will I do as a learning ambassador?

  • Check in theatre tickets in the Toyota Engineering Theatre and IMAX Dome Theatre
  • Speech crowds in both theatres, exciting the crowd while also letting them know our rules
  • Maintain daily operations in the theatres, reporting any issues that may arise that need attention from staff members
  • Keep theatre spaces tidy in-between showings

What qualifications do I need? 

  • Efficient with technology, such as iPhone’s and tablets
  • Public speaking skills
  • Ability to work independently

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability of lift up to 20 lbs
  • Ability to use stairs

Learning Ambassador

Purpose and Goals:

Mi-Sci has a number of exhibits that feature various interactive and immersive learning experiences in relation to many Science topics! Is there an exhibit you love, or topic you love to talk about that we display at Mi-Sci? Mi-Sci is looking for Learning Ambassador to patrol exhibits, help facilitate the use of those exhibits and engage guests with facts and knowledge about our exhibits! This volunteer role takes place in our main exhibit spaces, volunteers must have availability during open hours from Tuesday - Sunday in order to take up this role.  We expect volunteers to have a commitment of at least 5 hours a month to maintain their volunteering role at the Michigan Science Center.

What will I do as a learning ambassador?

  • Engage with guests in our current travelling exhibit, Towers of Tomorrow, and inspire them to innovate and build
  • Engage guests in specific galleries that you are passionate about
  • Engage guests with hands-on activities and demos that inspire learning
  • Facilitation within the Smithsonian Spark!Lab, assisting staff with activity prep, facilitation and engaging guests to be inventive
  • Potential activity, lesson plan or exhibit guide writing to create content that is exciting and new

What qualifications do I need? 

  • Ability to confidently speak to crowds of people and to individual groups
  • Basic knowledge of K-12 scientific concepts
  • Classroom or lesson plan writing experience (optional)

Physical Requirements:

  • Standing for prolonged periods of time
  • Lifting up to 30 lbs
