The Welcome Home Reentry Program (WHRP) assists men and women returning to their communities after incarceration by matching them with trained mentors from local parishes and the broader community. 


Pentors help empower mentees/inmates by offering guidance, a positive support network, and connections to resources to facilitate smooth and successful community reentry through letter writing 


The Pentor Program is interactive mentoring via written correspondence and is designed to engage inmates returning to Prince George's County through the thought and behavior process of change.


Mentoring through written correspondence will help inmates: 

  • Manage anxiety
  • Reduce stress
  • Develop trusting relationships
  • Equip them with soft skills necessary for a successful integration into society

Pentor volunteers will be responsible for: 

  • Facilitating and supporting mentor/inmate relationships
  • Helping inmates develop goals for reentry
  • Corresponding bi-weekly via letter or email with their inmate for 6-12 months to encourage a successful reentry process

  • Pentors must be at least 25 years old
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing
  • Mentors must be able to serve for 1 year

  • Pentors will participate in Catholic Charities Volunteer Orientation
  • Accepted pentors will be matched with an inmate from a state of federal correctional facility
  • The program manager will facilitate correspondence between the mentee and mentor 


Time Commitment: 

  • Volunteers will serve for 1 hour per week
  • Volunteers must serve for 1 year
  • Flexible hours (correspondence can be done any day of the week)

Next Steps: 

  • Due Oct. 18: Fill in an application
  • Dec 28 - Jan 14: Matching Expectations Conversation with Catholic Charities' staff
  • Jan 20 - Feb 8: Attend Volunteer Orientation, complete volunteer screenings, attend role-specific trainings
  • Late January: Begin volunteering!
