Ski & Snowboard Lessons


Volunteer Position Description 


Volunteers are valued as an integral part of our team bringing a wealth of enthusiasm, skill and experience. We treat our Recreation volunteers as potential future part-time employees.  We provide them with the skills they need to assist us effectively in our public programming and in return, we offer workshops and coaching that will improve their likelihood for employability. 


  1. Assignment: Snowboard Downhill Ski - Lesson Volunteers   



  1. Purpose of Assignment:  To create a positive learning space by ensuring the health, safety and fun of all participants. Continuously striving to deliver excellent customer service to all participants, parents/guardians and patrons. Volunteers will assist the Downhill Ski Coaches with teaching participants equipment basics, glides, and a straight run to a snow plow, turns, stops on a gentle slope as applicable to each sport. 


  1. Tasks: 

  • Greet participants as they enter the arena and ensuring they put belongings in appropriate area 

  • Engage and converse with participants while the staff speaks to parents  

  • Assist with the set up and breakdown of equipment, including pylons etc. 

  • Assist participants with equipment  

  • Help participants put on protective gear (helmets, gloves and padding) 

  • Be willing to lead activities (warm up and basic skills)  

  • Assist in the implementation of training and practice sessions 

  • Encourage, nurture and support participants’ skills and abilities during lessons 

  • Provide one-on-one assistance to participants during lessons 

  • Engage with participants who are shy or reluctant  

  • Accompany the staff and all participants for water breaks  

  • Create a fun and inclusive environment for participants by reporting any bullying or harassment  


  1. Time Commitment:  Snowboard Downhill Ski programs run at the Chinguacousy Ski Chalet and Hill. Shifts usually have a duration of 1-2 hours. Activities run on a weekly basis for an entire session. 


  1. Position Requirements: 

  • Must be at least 14 years’ old 

  • Must have attended a mandatory Volunteer Orientation/Training 

  • Must be an experienced in either Snowboarding Downhill Skiing 

  • Mandatory screening required prior to start of first on hill shift 

  • Must own their own Snowboard Downhill Ski equipment  

  • Regular attendance of all weekly lessons 

  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff and participants 

  • Be a team player, able to work well with fellow volunteers and staff 

  • Able to demonstrate patience when dealing with different participants  


  1. Supervision: Staff will always be present to provide supervision. For program specific inquires (including cancelled dates or missed shifts) report to the on-site contact. For any other volunteering concerns, report to the designated Volunteer Specialist. 


  1. Working Conditions:  Outdoors, ski hill. Will be assisting coaches with lessons on the ski hill for the full shift. Must be comfortable assisting begninner ski lesson particpants who have no experience to basic experience, and being outdoors for long periods. 


  1. Uniform Requirements:  Neutral clothing and jackets with no large logos. outdoor/snow appropriate clothing (snow pants, winter coat, hat and gloves) and full Snowboard &/or Downhill Ski equipment (ski or board boots, bindings, CSA ski/snowboard helmet).
