Volunteer Position Description


Volunteers are valued as an integral part of our team bringing a wealth of enthusiasm, skill and experience. We treat our Recreation volunteers as potential future part-time employees.  We provide them with the skills they need to assist us effectively in our public programming and in return, we offer workshops and coaching that will improve their likelihood for employability.


  1. Assignment: Camp Volunteer


  1. Purpose of Assignment:  To create a positive learning space by ensuring the health, safety and fun of all participants. Continuously striving to deliver excellent customer service to all participants, parent/guardians and patrons. Volunteers will assist with the implementation of crafts and games, as well as the engagement of participants.


  1. Tasks:
  • Greet participants as they arrive and ensuring they put belongings in appropriate area
  • Take initiative engaging campers in camp activities
  • Engage and converse with participants while the staff speaks to parent/guardians
  • Assist with the set up and breakdown of equipment for crafts and games
  • Participate in camp activities and promoting an inclusive environment
  • Help with snack and lunch time by assisting participants and keeping the area clean
  • Enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures
  • Accompany the staff and all participants for washroom and water breaks
  • Keep the participants engaged while the staff is transitioning to a new activity
  • Maintaining a safe, fun and engaging camp atmosphere
  • Some camps may required advanced skills an a particular activity (eg Swim Camp or Hockey Camp etc)


  1. Time Commitment:  Camps runs on a weekly basis at many recreation centres across the city. Camps run from 9am to 4pm and volunteers will have the option of working full or half days.


  1. Position Requirements:
  • Must be at least 14 years’ old
  • Must have attended a mandatory Volunteer Orientation/Training
  • Have the desire to work young children
  • Be enthusiastic and outgoing
  • Able to work in a fast paced, team based environment
  • Wiling to commit to volunteering for one full week
  • Able to effectively communicate with staff and participants
  • Able to react and adapt to new situations and environments


  1. Supervision: Staff will always be present. For program specific inquires (cancelled dates or missed shifts) report to the on-site contact. For any other volunteering concerns, report to the designated Volunteer Specialist.


  1. Working Conditions:  Indoor and outdoor conditions. Can either be in a gymnasium, community room or outside, with lots of active kids. Must be comfortable with standing, running, and jumping for long periods.


  1. Uniform Requirements:  Running shoes, neutral colored t-shirts with no logos, neutral pants/shorts with no rips preferably in dark colours. If provided by staff, volunteers must wear a singlet and/or name tag. Shorts must be of an appropriate length. In outdoor environments, volunteers are reminded to always wear sunblock, and bring drinking water.  If participating in a full day camp, volunteers will need to supply their own lunches.
