Mission Statement

The purpose of Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, in Tuolumne County, is to preserve and protect intact, an integrated complex of authentic structures and examples of the type of historic rolling stock and other railroad equipment once used by a typical short-line railroad of the late nineteenth century.  The unit provides the public with direct experiences of this aspect of the history of California transportation by observing historic railroading skills and operations, and by undertaking extensive steam train excursions through the Sierra Nevada foothill landscape.

California State Parks will preserve, protect, restore, interpret, and manage the unit's cultural, natural, and aesthetic resource, features and values, making them available to the public for their educational, inspirational, and recreational benefits.
