Applying to Volunteer

Please note: interviews will take place seasonally, based on program needs. Recruitment for Youth Services volunteers will typically take place each March, August and December.

Step 1: Review Eligibility

To apply to be a Youth Services volunteer, you must be:

  • 16 years or older
  • Eligible to volunteer in Canada (check your travel documents, if applicable)

Step 2: Apply

  • Fill in an application
  • Attend an interview
  • Submit 2 references
  • Complete a Police Information Check
Step 3: Getting Started
  • All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Orientation. Some positions may require additional training prior to their first shift. Your Volunteer Orientation will include an introduction to your Volunteer Supervisor and the facility in which you’ll be volunteering.
  • Following your Volunteer Orientation, you will officially be a member of the Youth Services volunteer team, and you will be able to sign up for volunteer opportunities using MyVolunteerPage.
  • This process can take up to 6 weeks, so we appreciate your patience and understanding.

General Interests

Youth-led Basketball Training

Assist Youth staff in developing a basketball training program which teaches the fundamentals of basketball and integrates these skills for everyday play. Volunteers will lead the program by organizing activities, ensuring each youth receives one-on-one support, adapting lessons to accommodate youth with varying levels of skill, and promoting a fun, inclusive, and positive environment. Volunteers will work with youth aged 11-13 and are expected to be mature, team-oriented individuals with a positive attitude.

Requirements:

  • 15 to 18 years of age
  • Previous experience playing basketball in a school program or extracurricular league
  • Previous leadership experience is an asset
  • Fluent in English; a second language is an asset

Seasons: Winter, Spring, Fall

Food with Friends

Help youth ages 11 to 18 in developing basic food prep skills and experience working in a commercial kitchen environment. Volunteers will assist Recreation Leaders in facilitating youth as they learn to follow recipes to prepare and enjoy a variety of nutritious meals.

Requirements:

  • 18 to 25 years of age preferred
  • Experience with preparing meals, kitchen safety, kitchen appliances
  • Experience mentoring children or youth an asset
  • Food Safe Level 1 an asset
  • Fluent in spoken English
