General Description
Serve in an important role in connecting Dakota County Library to residents by delivering books and other library materials to the homes of residents who are unable to visit the library due to illness, disability or visual impairment.
Location
Volunteer couriers may volunteer at any Dakota County Library branch.
Dates/Times
Flexible, based on customer requests and volunteer’s availability.
Duties & Responsibilities
Dakota County Library provides delivery of books and other materials to patrons who are unable to access a library due to illness, disability or visual impairment. Volunteers pick up materials from a designated library branch and deliver them to the customer. Volunteer couriers also pick up and return any library materials that the customer is finished with.
Duties and responsibilities include the following:
Delivery
- Pick up library materials from the library and transport the materials to the customer’s residence at a mutually convenient time.
- Pick up previously checked-out materials and return them to the library.
- Commit to at least 6 months of service in providing deliveries.
Communication
- Communicate with library staff regarding availability of your personal schedule for making deliveries.
- Communicate with library staff regarding any customer requests or feedback during deliveries.
- Comply and follow county policies for personal driving during volunteer/business hours.
Desired skills
- A safe driving record.
- Comfortable interacting with customers.
- Good communication skills.
- A genuine interest in serving the library needs of customers who are unable to visit the library.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.
- Must be able to provide proof of a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance upon request.
- Must complete a basic safe driving basics course (provided by Dakota County)
- Must be physically able to deliver library materials.
Minimum Time Commitment
Time commitment varies, dependent on customer requests. An estimated minimum of 1-3 hours per month is expected.
Required Training
Volunteers will receive a library volunteer orientation and basic training at the beginning of their service.
