APEGA Science Olympics (Edmonton) - Edmonton Event Volunteer (2026)

The Opportunity

 

 

The APEGA Science Olympics are back! APEGA's K-12 Outreach team is currently seeking enthusiastic volunteers interested in sharing their passion for engineering and geoscience with students at the 2026 APEGA Science Olympics. Volunteer in-person at the Edmonton or Calgary events. These events are great opportunities to foster a love for Engineering and Geoscience in students, promote your profession in the community, and network with other members.

APEGA’s Science Olympics events are a vital piece of inspiring the next generation of professional engineers and geoscientists and for introducing students to the exciting possibilities of a career in STEM. These events are a great opportunity to promote your profession in the community. By participating in the APEGA Science Olympics, volunteers challenge students to address real-world problems that require innovative solutions.

 

Event Volunteers

 

Event Volunteers help with tasks including but not limited to: signing in students, setting up challenge material, answering student questions, judging students on skills demonstrated and challenge criteria met, distributing certificates, swag, and awards, and cleaning up challenge material. Volunteers must rank their preferred role and are not guaranteed to be assigned their first choice role.

 

Judges:   

  • Evaluate teams as they work and fill out scoring rubrics  
  • Interact with students continually throughout the day, moving around to testing stations and team tables  
  • Use a device (tablet etc.) to complete rubrics  

 

Scoring Table Volunteers:   

  • Tabulate scores, prepare data for the awards ceremony, ensure all scores are submitted, follow-up on missing scores and connect with staff about any scoring anomalies  

 

Event Assistant Volunteers   

  • Assist with team sign in, t-shirt hand out, awards ceremony, set-up/clean up and general tasks  
  • May be assigned a variety of tasks throughout the day  
  • Interact with other volunteers throughout the day and may interact with students depending on the assignment

Edmonton

Training Session (3-hours, in-person) Feb 2nd to 7th

 

Event Date (Feb 22nd, 2026)

7:30am – 1:30pm

11:30am – 6:30pm

 

Event Location: University of Alberta Butterdome

Required Qualifications

  • Promote your profession and enhance the understanding of the work of engineers and geoscientists 
  • Fulfil CPD requirements by adding your APEGA volunteering activities to your PACE plan
  • Connect with other practicing members and university student members 
  • Earning hours towards APEGA Volunteer Service Awards 
  • Promote a love of engineering and geoscience to students (grades 1-12) and their families, show the fun side and practical applications of engineering and geoscience 
  • Involvement in a fun and rewarding experience 
  • Practicing or retired professional member, E.I.T., G.I.T., university student or applicant, in engineering or geoscience.
  • Non-members with related experience in outreach, education, or STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields are encouraged to apply. 
  • Interest in promoting engineering, geoscience, technology, and related careers to students in K-12.
