Thanks so much for volunteering with Solid Ground! Each year, our organization engages 500+ volunteers in a variety of opportunities that support our mission of preventing and ending homelessness for families with children in the communities we serve. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with our community!
Provide direct support while getting to know the families at Solid Ground! Serve as an academic tutor for youth or adults, welcome visitors as a front desk assistant, help families shop for groceries as a mobile food shelf helper, and more. Support participants by helping them access additional resources throughout the community.
Support events for program participants such as Community Meals, Night to Unite, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Graduation, annual resident Holiday Party, and more. Additionally, volunteers can help with the planning and logistics for our two large fundraising events: the Every Family Needs a Home Breakfast (held in the Spring) and the Bring it Home Gala (held in the fall).
Volunteer needs vary depending on the event.
Help collect, sort, and distribute essential items for Solid Ground families including personal care kits, back-to-school kits, welcome home kits, underwear & sock packs, birthday bags, and more! Scheduling is flexible and determined by the volunteer.
Great for any size group. Group must provide necessary supplies. Project can also be completed on-site at East Metro Place.
Join one (or multiple) of our many planning committees to help provide strategic leadership, fiduciary oversight and serve as an ambassador for the organization. Opportunities include Board of Directors, Community Engagement, Housing Opportunities and more.

The mission of Solid Ground is to prevent and end homelessness for families with children in the communities we serve through housing, resources and opportunity.
Every family has a safe and affordable home, where parents and children thrive in school, at work and their community and can achieve their goals and dreams.
Person-Centered – We are responsive to all we serve: participants, partners, the community and one another. We design our programs with the individual at the core, acknowledging their strengths and working to identify the best path for their family’s success.
Equity & Inclusion – We acknowledge systemic racism, classism and other forms of discrimination as primary causes of the affordable housing crisis and homelessness. We work to right these wrongs as a housing and service provider by engaging respectfully with our program participants, our employees and our community.
Integrity – We build trust with others, act with transparency and hold ourselves to the highest standards in all we do.
Community – We believe that safe, stable and affordable housing is the foundation of healthy, successful families and thriving communities.
Solid Ground was established in 1987 by a group of women in Ramsey and Washington Counties seeking to address the needs of families living on a low income in their communities. Though originally envisioned to serve women with children, Solid Ground houses all family structures, including single fathers and two-parent families.
Solid Ground’s primary goal is to help families experiencing homelessness achieve stability and to sustain permanent housing so that they have the foundation upon which to build their future. Our programming focuses on assisting families to acquire greater proficiency in their independent living skills, as well as accessing chemical dependency treatment, physical and mental health services, affordable childcare and transportation, and other needed resources so that when they leave our housing, they are more self-sufficient and better able to support their family. Solid Ground strives to provide trauma-informed care and serve each family in a holistic manner, addressing both the needs of the individual and family as a whole. Solid Ground currently operates eight supportive housing programs serving approximately 500+ homeless women, men and children each year.
Thank you for volunteering and welcome to Solid Ground! Volunteers are very important to the work we do and to the people we serve. Your impact will be felt by the families and staff of Solid Ground for many years to come.
