A minimum of three hours and a maximum of five hours per shift

Program Information:

The iconic Moomba Festival welcomes people into the city annually on the Labour Day long weekend in March, to experience the traditions and fun of Melbourne’s longest-running and largest community festival.

A celebration of Melbourne, Moomba is famous for its Moomba Monarchs who reign over the traditional Monday street parade, Birdman Rally on the Yarra River, carnival in Alexandra Gardens and nightly fireworks.

Role summary:

Information Booth

Throughout the duration of the event, volunteers will be responsible for staffing the Moomba festival information booths.

Information Booth volunteers may work autonomously for the duration of their shift and must report to the Volunteer Coordinator at the commencement and conclusion of each allocated shift.

Meet and Greet

Throughout the duration of the festival, Meet & Greet volunteers will be the first point of contact for patrons. Volunteers should have exceptional communication skills and personal presentation.

Volunteers undertaking these shifts should feel comfortable standing for long periods of time.

Volunteers may work autonomously for the duration of their shift and must report to the Volunteer Coordinator at the commencement and conclusion of each allocated shift.

Event Assistant

Volunteers will primarily be responsible for assisting the Event Management team with a number of event duties for the duration of the festival.

Volunteers undertaking these shifts should feel comfortable standing for long periods of time.

Volunteers will be supervised in most cases, however should be comfortable working autonomously if required. Volunteers must report to the Volunteer Coordinator at the commencement and conclusion of each allocated shift.

Activation Assistant

Volunteers will be responsible for assisting the activation team with operational requirements. Volunteers should have exceptional customer service skills and be confident to communicate with talent, members of the public, children and celebrities if required.

Volunteers will be supervised in most cases, however should be comfortable working autonomously if required. Volunteers must report to the Volunteer Coordinator at the commencement and conclusion of each allocated shift.

Sustainability Champion

Volunteers will be responsible for assisting to educate the public on Moomba's sustainability initiatives. Volunteers should have exceptional customer service skills and be confident to communicate with members of the public, children and celebrities if required.

Volunteers will be supervised in most cases, however should be comfortable working autonomously if required. Volunteers must report to the Volunteer Coordinator at the commencement and conclusion of each allocated shift.

What you will be doing:

Information Booth

  • Provide information to patrons about the festival site
  • Provide information to patrons about the programming areas of the festival
  • Assist patrons with general enquiries
  • Manage lost property items
  • Stock and maintain festival collateral within the information booth

Meet and Greet

  • Greet patrons
  • Hand out official programs
  • Collect patron contact emails for future research surveys
  • Assist patrons with festival enquiries
  • Direct patrons around the festival site
  • Direct patrons to the information booths for further information

Event Assistant

  • Relay messages between staff and other volunteers
  • Undertake specific duties as outlined by your supervisor
  • Assist with runner duties
  • Assist with set up and pack down of equipment
  • Assist Event Management team with other duties as required

Activation Assistant

  • Assist activation team with operational requirements
  • Stage management assistance
  • Relay messages between staff and artists
  • Assist with front of house and back of house management
  • Assist with children’s workshops and activities

Sustainability Champion

  • Promote sustainability initiatives to Moomba patrons
  • Assist at sustainability activation sites throughout precinct
  • Assist activation team with operational requirements
  • Assist with set up and pack down of equipment
  • Assist patrons with festival enquiries

TYPICAL TASKS: Tasks are mainly based out in the field, across both outdoor or undercover areas /indoor facilities. There is a small amount of desk or bench type computer/screen based activities and correspondence. The role involves significant standing and movement across various surfaces, including stairs or inclines and may require observational work and/or checking various assets during site work with other officers or volunteers, third party representatives and the public who may require provision of assistance or guidance and information.
