Partners' Oppoutunities - Support Volunteer

The Support Volunteer serves as a Buddy, Advocate, Supporter, and Friend to veterans, helping them navigate daily life challenges, reintegrate into their communities, and build meaningful relationships. This role prioritizes listening, empathy, and consistency while providing practical support and advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Listen and Support

    • Provide empathetic, non-judgmental support.

    • Focus on listening rather than "fixing" problems.

  2. Advocate and Assist

    • Help veterans navigate systems like the VA, technology (phones, apps, laptops), utilities, banking, employment, and legal needs.

  3. Build Trust

    • Meet regularly (at least once per week) in public spaces.

    • Be reliable, punctual, and consistent.

  4. Transportation Support

    • Assist with public transportation or provide rides when appropriate.

  5. Facilitate Reintegration

    • Encourage engagement in hobbies, sports, outings, or community activities.

  6. Holiday Support

    • Include veterans in holiday gatherings, dining out, or social visits.

  7. Resource Gathering

    • Identify and share helpful resources from local nonprofits.

  8. De-escalate Situations

    • Stay calm, mindful of mental health, and escalate to professionals if necessary.

Expectations:

  • Frequency of Contact: Meet or call at least once per week in public spaces (for safety and liability purposes).

  • Safety and Boundaries: Avoid private/in-home visits unless expressly authorized.

  • Empathy and Patience: Build relationships through consistent, empathetic engagement.
