Discover the Flyway Docent (school field trips)
Goal (purpose) of position: To provide K-12 school groups with a hands-on, interactive learning experience focused on the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area and Yolo Demonstration Wetlands.
Duties: DTF docents set up, run and take down learning activities as outlined in the lesson plans selected by visiting groups. Each docent is responsible for one learning activity on any day and can expect to repeat the learning activity 3-4 times with different small groups of children on that day. You will be part of a group of docents and staff. A YBF staff member will carry out the overall coordination of the days learning activities.
Supervised by: Education Coordinator
Time Commitment: 3-3 1/2 hours twice a month, or more if you are able. The program generally runs Tuesday-Friday 8:00-11:30am during the school year.
Qualifications:An enthusiasm for working with children, a passion for nature and an interest in wetlands and local species. Detailed prior knowledgis not required of DTF docents. DTF docents must also be able tolift a light amount of weight.
Training: Discover the Flyway Docents participate in a comprehensive wetlands education training which runs over 3-4 sessions. The initial training session covers establishment/significance of the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, role of the Yolo Basin Foundation and the Department of Fish and Wildlife and species found in the YBWA. Subsequent training sessions focus on learning specific activities that docents will run with school groups. DTF docents are also required to shadow other docents for at least 2 days after training and before leading activities themselves. A detailed resource package with background material and lesson plans is provided.
