Los Dichos Elementary Reader
Read a book - Change a Life!
Los Dichos volunteers read specially selected bilingual books about the Latino culture to elementary-aged students on a monthly basis for approximately 45 minutes in a classroom setting. The books illustrate valuable lessons including positive cultural identity, cultural competence, family pride, respect, healthy decision making, goal setting, self-esteem, friendship, tolerance, and peaceful conflict resolution. The volunteers read the book in Spanish and the teacher or another volunteer read the same book in English ensuring that all students have a thorough understanding of the story. Volunteers also lead short discussions and hands-on classroom activities that reinforce the lesson with the students.
Times: August to May of the current school year, time commitment of two to three hours a month.
Requirements: Project Cornerstone volunteer application, school district requirements, Take It Personally or Assets 101 training, and monthly school site trainings to review the book and lesson plan for the upcoming month.
