Are you looking for a rewarding way to give back to your community? Shelter for Help in Emergency offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for people who are interested in becoming an integral part of a caring, inclusive, and committed team of staff and volunteers dedicated to helping those living with abuse. Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Answering the Shelter's 24-hour hotline
  • Assisting staff at our residential facility
  • Facilitating children’s programs
  • Helping with special events and fundraisers
  • Assisting with outreach, education and prevention activities
  • Providing a safe home for victim’s pets
  • Transporting and organizing donation items
  • Assisting with our recycling program
  • Organizing a donation drive for items on our Shelter Wish List 

All volunteers must complete a background check and some level of training. The Shelter offers a full volunteer training session multiple times a year and also provides individual training on an as-needed basis. If you are interested in volunteering, please review the application process and fill out an application using Better Impact. Once your application is complete, our Community Engagement Coordinator will reach out to you to discuss the training process and how you can join our amazing group of volunteers.  

Other ways you can help include making a tax-deductible donation to the Shelter or purchasing support materials that raise funds for the Shelter. About the Shelter for Help in Emergency

Mission Statement:  Working to end domestic violence in our community.

Since 1979, the Shelter for Help in Emergency has worked to support and empower victims of domestic/intimate partner violence through a combination of trauma-informed residential and community-based outreach services, including a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, safety planning, information and referral, resource assistance, legal advocacy and court accompaniment, supportive counseling, outreach to the Spanish-speaking community, and programs for children and youth.
