Navigator Program Volunteer

Are you a compassionate person with a heart for immigrant communities?  Do you want to learn more about the field while making a real difference? Help honor the dignity and contributions of the newest members of the Washington, D.C. area immigrant community by volunteering with the Catholic Charities Navigator Program!  The Navigator program provides urgently needed community coordination and case management to foreign‐born individuals and their families.  The program supports people who have been in the country for fewer than 5 years to get connected with various services including health and medical, legal, housing, food and nutrition programs, and different employment and education needs.  Volunteers greatly increase our impact through the gifts of their time and talent.

Volunteers serve a critical role within the program, increasing our capacity to serve and helping us meet our goal of providing competent, meaningful case management to those in need.  Volunteers perform much-needed functions that free our staff to focus their time and energy on the individual goals and plans of each person or family. Volunteers may perform various functions, from valuable clerical assistance to working directly with clients in gathering information, making advocacy calls, or distributing essential goods.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide administrative support to our offices and/or Caseworkers
  • Assemble referral or intake packets
  • Assist staff in managing files or donations
  • Assist clients make follow up advocacy phone calls or emails
  • Pick up, drop off or distribute various donations (such as Clarksburg Closet, the Diaper Bank of Montgomery County, etc)

Qualifications:

  • Minimum age 18
  • Basic to intermediate computer competence (email, word processing, and beyond)
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Fluent in spoken & written English
  • Spanish or other language skills preferred

Support:

  • Volunteers receive on-site support from the Caseworkers they work alongside. They undergo individualized training for all necessary tasks. Additionally, the Senior Program Manager provides direct supervision. The team fosters a supportive atmosphere that encourages questions and suggestions.

Time Commitment:

  • The Navigator Program is in search of volunteers ready to dedicate a minimum of 16 hours each week on a consistent basis. While volunteer hours are adaptable, the typical workday runs from 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Monday to Friday. The staff will collaborate with volunteers to establish a weekly schedule that accommodates both the volunteers' availability and the program's requirements.

  • Parking is available at all sites
  • All offices are also within walking distance to bus and metro stations
