
Alberta Hospital Edmonton provides inpatient and outpatient treatment services, through a continuum of care, to adults with severe and persistent psychiatric illness. Volunteers at AHE provide meaningful support to patients and their families through a variety of roles.
What are the qualities of a Volunteer with Mental Health & Addictions?
If you are interested in volunteering with us, consider whether or not you have an interest and ability in:
- Have an interest and relevant experience in the field of Mental Health and Addictions. Experience can be lived or via education.
- Being able to work collaboratively with health care providers to improve care and experiences for patients and their families.
- Having a strong desire to help others struggling with mental health and/or addictions issues.
- Being a compassionate listener
- Having an ability to show respect for the perspectives of others
- Having an ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Have a willingness to give your time on a consistent basis for a minimum of 6 months
- Must be 18 years of age or older
What is the Role of the Volunteer?
Volunteers play an integral role within Mental Health & Addictions. They provide support to patients and family members within staff lead programs and on an individual basis. Volunteers can assist our adult patients/clients at Alberta Hospital Edmonton or sites within the community.

Step 2: Volunteer Resources will e-mail out positions as they become available. If you are interested and able to do the stated commitment, e-mail to book an interview.
Step 3: At the interview, if it is agreed that we have a position that is a good match for your skills and availability, you will be asked to complete our volunteer on-boarding process which includes:
- Police Information Check
- Communicable Disease Assessment Form
- AHS and site orientations
- Provide 2 letters of reference
Step 4: Training, specific to your position, will be provided. Additional learning opportunities are available to our volunteers as part of our learning culture.
