FAQ(s)

Where is the actual volunteer application?

The city has a decentralized volunteer program. This means you apply to each department that has a role currently open. On the left side menu under "Available Opportunities by Area" (or scroll down if on a mobile device) you will see all areas with current openings. Click the area of interest and view the available general interest opportunities. You can apply directly from the general interest by clicking the "Fill in an application" button. We encourage volunteers serving in multiple departments, but highly recommend starting in one area and completing the full onboarding before applying to other areas.

How old do you have to be to volunteer at the Henderson Animal Care & Control?

You must be 18 years old to volunteer at the shelter.

Do you accept volunteers for high school or college service requirements?

Yes, BUT these hours are primarily with Parks & Recreation Outdoor Recreation or City Special Events. There is no set schedule for available events. All other City opportunities require long-term and recurring commitments and are not conducive to short term service. Periodically we host events open to the public that do not require onboarding as a long-term or recurring volunteer.

What if I do not see an activity, I know the city has

How do I learn about becoming a Youth Sports Coach?

Contact the Parks & Recreation Sports Division at (702) 267-5717 or email COHYouthLeague@cityofhenderson.com

Can I volunteer for multiple departments/sections?

Yes. However, you must apply and complete onboarding in one area before expanding service to other areas.

Does the Volunteer Connection host court-ordered community service opportunities?

No, but you can call (702) 267-1350 to learn about options in the community.

What does the onboarding process entail?

Apply online, interview with a staff member, complete a criminal background check, complete online initial training, attend City-wide Volunteer Onboarding (held four times a month in-person or virtual), attend department/section orientation and/or training. The entire process can take up to 45 days from the time you apply. Police Department volunteer applicants can expect to exceed 45 days due to background screening.

Is there a place to see volunteer photos?

Yes, check out the Volunteer Connection Flickr profile here.
