Volunteer Connection – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Where do I find the volunteer application?

The City of Henderson uses a decentralized volunteer system, meaning you apply directly to the department offering the role.
On the Volunteer Connection page, look for “Available Opportunities by Area” on the left menu (or scroll down on mobile). Click the department you’re interested in, review the available roles, and apply by selecting “Fill in an application.”
Tip: Start with one department and complete onboarding before applying to others.

How old do I need to be to volunteer at Henderson Animal Care & Control?

You must be 18 years or older to volunteer at the shelter.

Does the City have a youth or teen volunteer program?

There isn’t a dedicated teen program, but teens can volunteer for certain roles without age restrictions:

  • 15 and under: Must volunteer with a parent/legal guardian.
  • 16–17: May volunteer independently.

All minors need a parent/guardian to sign a waiver before volunteering.

Can I volunteer to meet high school or college service requirements?

Yes! Most short-term service opportunities are through Parks & Recreation Outdoor Recreation or City Special Events. Other roles typically require long-term commitments and may not fit short-term needs. Check back often for public events that don’t require full onboarding.

What if I don’t see an activity, I know the City offers?

If it’s not listed, there are no current openings. Contact the Training & Volunteer Programs Coordinator or check back periodically.

Do you accept volunteer groups?

Yes! Contact the Training & Volunteer Programs Coordinator for details.

Can I volunteer in multiple departments?

Yes, but complete onboarding in one department before applying to others.

Does Volunteer Connection offer court-ordered community service?

No. Court ordered service is managed by the Henderson Detention Center Special Programs. Call (702) 267-1350 for community options.

What does the onboarding process include?

  • Submit an online application
  • Interview with staff
  • Criminal background check (if 18 years old and older)
  • Complete online training
  • Attend City-wide onboarding (virtual or in-person, held 4 times monthly)
  • Attend department-specific orientation

The process can take up to 45 days (longer for Police Department roles).

Where can I see volunteer photos?

Visit our Volunteer Connection Flickr profile.

Can volunteering help me meet SNAP work requirements?

Currently, we do not have volunteer roles under the Volunteer Connection Program that count toward SNAP work requirements for ABAWD (Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents). However, below are resources to help.

  • Inquire with your Nevada DSS case manager.
  • Check the ABAWD Resource List on the Nevada DSS website for approved organizations.
  • Document your hours carefully—DSS requires proper verification.
  • For questions about acceptable documentation or SNAP rules, contact DSS:
