Community Emergency Response Team

Hi and welcome to the CERT San Diego information page!  Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we will not be holding in-person training until further notice. However, we are participating in a Hybrid CERT Academy format, where new volunteers may complete an online portion (the completion certificate will be valid nine months from the completion date on the certificate) and then schedule in-person training at a later date. 

If you are interested in taking part of that future academy, please follow these steps to ensure you will receive all updates and notifications related to the academy.

First, if you have a profile in Better Impact already, please as CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) to your profile.  If not, please create one by filling out a CERT application.  

Second, please visit this Survey Monkey link (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/X37JVDJ) and answer its four quick questions (should take less than a minute).  Once you complete this survey, you will be sent instructions and information on how to access the online training.  

Third, when you sign up for the online training, you may be given the option to create a profile in a platform called "Merit" (www.merits.com).  This system allows both me and the group that hosts the online training to send you certificates of completion.  Though not required, creating a profile in this platform will allow you to manage, organize, and share with others all your training merits from one centralized location.  CERT San Diego will continue to use this to send attendance confirmations once we are able to resume training.  If you plan to become an active member in CERT San Diego, I highly recommend creating a profile in this platform.

Important notes for out of town guests: Everyone is welcome to complete the online training.  However, priority registration for in-person training is given to city of San Diego residents (working in the city does not count).  Also, if you plan to complete the city's Hybrid training, get a seat assign to you for the in-person training, but plan to join another CERT team, please check with that team to confirm they will accept the Hybrid training.

When dates for the academy are announced, an email will be sent to everyone who has submitted a certificate of completion.  Seats will be assigned on a first come, first served basis for city of San Diego residents.  Out of town guests who respond will be put on a wait list in the order that they responded and will be offered any available seats a week prior to the first day of the in-person training.  The in-person training will be over a period of two weekends, which may be consecutive or staggered.  Start time is 10am for students and run for approximately three hours.

Here are some pointers on navigating Better Impact should you decide to create a profile with us.

Under each of our "Opportunities,"  some "Activities" are listed.  When you click an Activity, you will be taken to a page that provides more details just on that specific Activity.  Also on this page you will see a section called "Qualifications".  To sign up for an activity, you must meet the listed qualifications. 

To get to your Qualifications page, click the "My Profile" tab on your home page, and select "Qualifications" from the drop-down list that appears.  Here you can select the appropriate qualifications for an activity.  (*Note:  next to each qualification is an "I".  Click this "I" to get details on what information is needed; you may need to scroll down to see all information.)

Future Academy Notification Email List

Are you interested in learning disaster preparedness skills that may help you prepare for and recover from a major natural disaster?  Please consider signing up to be notified of when the next CERT SD Academy dates are announced.

Priority registration is given to those who live in the city of San Diego.  However we invite our out-of-town students to create a profile and come on the first day of class. If there are seats available, out-of-town students are welcome to join our academy.

As you consider this opportunity, here is a description of the requirements.

     Students must be at least 18 years old. 

     Attendance on all four days of the academy is mandatory for graduation.

Classes are held on two consecutive weekends (on both Saturday and Sunday) from approximately 9:30am until 4pm each day.  Classes will start promptly at 10am.  The location of the training will be provided upon successful registration.  There is no cost for the training and we provide safety gear and classroom materials.
