Volunteer- Turtle Nest Monitoring in Brampton - RECRUITING FOR 2025 Monitoring Season at this time

Volunteer Role Details:

Duration: April 2025 - November 2025 

Volunteer Hours: no set schedule, monitoring takes place any day of the week before dusk

Work Location(s): Brampton - Loafer's Lake, Etobicoke Creek Trail, Donnelly Park

How you will contribute as part of the TRCA Volunteer team:

Volunteering for this opportunity, you will play a critical role in collecting data on wildlife sightings and install nest protectors as required to protect turtle nests.

What you will do as a volunteer: 

  • Search for turtles and nesting activity
  • Install nest protectors on observed or suspected nesting sites
  • Collect data on collisions/mortality rates of amphibians and reptiles along the trails and paths at identified locations in Brampton
  • Record observations using Survey 123 app

What will you need to succeed:

  • A cellphone
  • Comfortable using apps
  • Amphibian and reptile identification skills helpful, not required

Volunteer- Citizen Science Volunteer Program, Monitoring and Maintenance - RECRUITING FOR 2025

Duration:  April 2025 - November 2025

Volunteer Hours: Weekdays 9 am - 2 pm

How you will contribute as part of the TRCA Volunteer team:

The Citizen Science Volunteer Program provides volunteers with new skills that could be transferrable for future career opportunities in the environmental field or to provide unique and interesting learning activities for anyone who is passionate about the environment and would like to give back. Through the program, volunteers will help make areas more resilient and adaptable, increasing success and population growth.  We train and mentor volunteers to assist TRCA staff with a variety of priority projects. 

What you will do as a volunteer: 

Looking to either improve your tree and shrub identification skills or just to practice your ID skills? Volunteers with this opportunity will help staff maintain new plantings, identify trees and shrubs and collect data and record in a handheld Trimble Unit. The data collected help staff determine what species work well at each site for future restoration opportunities and to monitor the success rate of the material planted. This opportunity also involves some general site and infrastructure maintenance, watering, and is an amazing way to get into nature while focusing on citizen science.  

What will you need to succeed:

  • Passion for or knowledge of environmental topics, with a focus on local wildlife, native plants, and environmental conservation
  • Native plant identification skills is an asset
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Physically able to walk on uneven terrain
  • Willingness to learn
  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older
  • Experience with fieldwork and/or collecting data is an asset

Invasive management allows volunteers to have an immediate, positive impact on naturalized areas within the GTA. You will be going to sites and trained on removing plants that are competing with native species, allowing the native species to grow and thrive.  Removing invasive species also helps birds and pollinators find the most nutritious and resilient plants for food and habitat and stops the spread of noxious weeds into your homes and trails. If you like to see an immediate improvement to an area and a job well done, invasive management is a perfect fit.​

How you will contribute as part of the TRCA Volunteer team:

Through the program, volunteers will help make areas more resilient and adaptable, increasing success and population growth. What you will do as a volunteer: 

The spring and fall seasons are very busy with a variety of events and this opportunity is great for those that love interacting with the public. Tasks would include:

  • Helping to set up for events
  • Assisting with registration check-in
  • Helping participants with planting demonstrations
  • Going around and assisting participants while they are planting

What will you need to succeed:

  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Physically able to walk on uneven terrain a short distance from parking lot to planting sites.
  • Interest in environmental conservation.
  • Native plant identification skills is an asset
  • Willingness to learn
  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older
  • Experience with fieldwork and/or collecting data is an asset

Volunteer- Citizen Science Volunteer Program, Medicine Wheel Garden and Pollinator Plot Maintenance

How you will contribute as part of the TRCA Volunteer team:

The Citizen Science Volunteer Program provides volunteers with new skills that could be transferrable for future career opportunities in the environmental field or to provide unique and interesting learning activities for anyone who is passionate about the environment and would like to give back. Through the program, volunteers will help make areas more resilient and adaptable, increasing success and population growth. We train and mentor volunteers to assist TRCA staff with a variety of priority projects. 

What you will do as a volunteer: 

This opportunity would predominately be working with TRCA staff and members of the Four Colours Drum Circle, an Indigenous group who are the caretakers of the Medicine Wheel Garden located within the Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton.  Beyond the maintenance of the pollinator plots we are looking to expand the programming held at the MWG and volunteers would be engaged with these activities including the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Sept 30) and other events.​

What will you need to succeed:

  • Passion for or knowledge of environmental topics, with a focus on local wildlife, native plants, and environmental conservation
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization and communication skills
  • Native plant identification skills is an asset
  • Willingness to learn
  • Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older
