What is a Front of House Volunteer?
Every year, thousands of people visit the RAF Museum London. Along with our Visitor Experience staff, the Front of House Volunteer team are the face of the RAF Museum, helping to welcome guests and create special moments and memories within this unique setting.
What will I be doing?
The Front of House Volunteer role includes a range of tasks which can be tailored to you:
- Meeting and greeting our visitors, providing a warm welcome and friendly face
- Interacting with visitors throughout their visit, sharing information, providing directions, and answering any questions
- Driving our golf buggy shuttle service taking visitors between Hangars
- Helping visitors get the most from our interactive exhibits, explaining how they work
- Running an object handling table, showing objects and uniforms visitors can touch
- Researching and delivering a short talk on an RAF subject of your choice, with support
- Assisting with the museum’s holiday events programmes

This role can be demanding but can be adapted to your abilities and experience. Our volunteering experiences are designed to reflect our diverse and vibrant communities and we welcome volunteers from all backgrounds. Volunteers for this role will need to be 18+.
How much time do I need to commit?
This role is currently available during our peak periods of weekends and school holidays. We are ideally looking for a commitment of one day a month. We offer full and half-day shifts.

How will I be trained?
You will be invited to a group induction day during a weekend and/or school holidays. This will include a tour of the museum and introduction to the role and using the golf buggy. After this for your first few shifts you will be buddied up with a member of staff as a ‘welcomer’ in H1 or delivering the golf buggy offer solo. Those interested in writing and delivering talks to visitors will be able to sign up for our 10-minute talk development programme from their first shift. Opportunities to train as an ‘explainer’ in each hangar and deliver object handling sessions will be offered periodically to those interested. Front of House volunteers will also be asked to undertake eLearning modules on safeguarding, health and safety, and manual handling. Arrangements can be made for completion onsite for any volunteers without computer/ internet access.
