Pre-school Session Volunteer

Pre-school session volunteer

Do you enjoy working with families with young children? Are you looking to further your skills in this area? Come and join in with Little Swifts, our pre-school session for 2 – 5 year olds.

Our fun and lively sessions for pre-school children (aged 2-5 years) include arts and crafts, games, stories and songs. Each session is linked to our amazing collection and helps bring our Museum to life. Sessions are usually held on the second Tuesday and last Thursday of the month (during term time) and last for approximately 1 hour.

These sessions are part of our Learning Programme to encourage more families with pre-school children to visit the Museum and have proved to be popular. Having a volunteer there to support will mean that there are enough people to welcome and support families on arrival and also to encourage engagement with all activities. If you can give 2 hours of your time, twice a month and want to be involved in fun and friendly activities, this could be the role for you.

You will:

  • Work alongside RAF Museum staff to set up and clear away activities
  • Greet adults and children attending Little Swifts
  • Support and encourage children in engaging with activities
  • Join in with all the fun and games!

You will be:

  • Comfortable working with small children up to the age of 5
  • Approachable, friendly and enthusiastic
  • Able to follow instructions carefully
  • Able to ensure a safe play environment for families
  • Hands-on, confident and able to take responsibility

There will be a recruitment and induction session prior to starting. This will take place on Thursday 6 February 2020 (10.00 – 11.00am) which will cover:

  • Introduction to the RAF Museum (priorities, site and collections)
  • Site health and safety
  • Introduction to the role
  • Safeguarding awareness training

Further training will be provided as required once you start.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) and Trial Period

This position will require a Disclosure and Barring Service (Basic Disclosure) check. The Museum will make arrangements for this check unless you are already signed up to the DBS update service.

We run a trial period system – this gives both you and us the chance to make sure this is a suitable match for the role.  For this role, the trial period is up to 3 volunteering shifts.

The sessions are usually held on the second Tuesday and last Thursday of the month (term time only).

The first session for volunteers will be on Tuesday 11 February 2020.

The session runs from 10.30 – 11.30am. The hours for volunteering would be 10am – 12pm to include time for setting up and clearing away.

Travel and food expenses will be reimbursed up to £10 per day, in line with our policy.

Conversation Café Volunteers (with ESOL Learners)

ESOL Conversation Cafe Session

Café Conversation Volunteers
(with ESOL Learners)

Conversation Cafes involve a small group of people discussing and sharing their stories, thoughts and memories together. Our focus is to enable ESOL speakers to practise their spoken English skills, outside the classroom, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Taking part in a project like this makes a big difference to their abilities, learning and mental health.

The RAF Museum is a community hub; this role is key in welcoming new audiences and building strong relationships with our visitors and community – our Conversation Café sessions are at the heart of this. The Conversation Café is run in conjunction with partners at Barnet and Southgate College.

Participants have said:

“I don’t have so many opportunities to speak English...in my home I only speak my own language, and every time I have this opportunity to talk with another people in English it is very interesting and very good”

“It’s very good. After college I come here, and because I’m coming here I speak English, and write English. Maybe next week I bring my family, my wife, my son”
