Forming a new Friends Group

To start a group, all you need to do is get together with like-minded people, consider the information provided in this manual and gather the required information outlined below

  1. Identify a contact person (Convenor) and the number of like-minded people in your area who wish to work in a reserve.
  2. Complete a proposal for the new Friends group 
  3. Email environment@nillumbik.vic.gov.au to initiate contact with the Environmental Works team about your proposal

 

Flora and Fauna Monitoring Volunteers

Flora and Fauna Monitor

 

 

PURPOSE:

 

This role will assist the Environmental Works Officers in the monitoring of flora and fauna across bushland reserves within the Nillumbik Shire Council.

 

LOCATION:

 

Nillumbik Shires Council bushland reserves – various locations.

 

KEY TASKS:

 

  • Monitoring flora or fauna in remote areas of bushland reserves
    • Fauna monitoring: placement and retrieval of motion-sensing cameras, monitoring artificial habitat such as nest boxes or dunnart tiles 
    • Flora monitoring: assessment of vegetation condition as per specified methodology
  • Providing collected data to the Environmental Works team
  • Supporting data processing
  • Input data into Council's volunteer database

 

TIME COMMITMENT:

 

Between 4 – 10 hours per month (negotiated depending on the project).

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

 

  • Good communication
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team
  • Ability to perform physical tasks or support data processing remotely
  • Able to follow detailed instructions
  • Able to enter information into a database

 

SUPPORT:

 

Training and orientation for this position will be provided by the Volunteer Coordinator and other relevant staff within the Environmental Works team. Ongoing support will be provided throughout the volunteer’s involvement in the program.

 

SECURITY/MEDICAL CHECKS AND LICENCE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Reference check (minimum of two referees required)
  • Current First Aid Certificate
  • Current Working with Children check

NOTES ON PROBITY CHECKS:

 

Working With Children Checks

 

If your role involves working with children or is in a location that offers activities to children, you will require a valid Working with Children Check card and assessment notice.  It is a requirement of your volunteer role to advise your supervisor within seven days of receipt of a Negative Notice.  As this is an inherent requirement for this position the volunteer position of individuals without a valid WWC Check will be terminated.

 

CHILD SAFE STANDARDS

 

Council is required by law to take a preventative, proactive, participatory and inclusive approach to child safety issues.  Council must comply with all legal requirements, including reporting suspicions of child abuse to police and/ or child protection. You will receive an invite to Child Safe Standards training shortly after commencing.  It’s a mandatory requirement for all Nillumbik Staff and volunteers to complete this.
