Volunteer Opportunities

Community Gardener - Panton Hill

Whether you are an experienced gardener or absolute beginner‚ everyone is welcome to join this group and participate.

Key Tasks:

  • Attend gardening sessions 
  • Assist in the maintenance of the overall garden area
  • Assist in the prolonged growth and health of plants through watering, fertilising, composting, weeding, sweeping and planting
  • Assist in the development, implementation and adaption of garden plans
  • Help maintain gardening equipment

REPORTS TO: Garden Coordinator/ Neighbourhood House Coordinaor

TIME COMMITMENT: Fridays from 3pm – 5pm (Flexible)

Dependant on weather conditions

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • No skills required

SUPPORT: training and support provided

 

SECURITY/MEDICAL CHECKS AND LICENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Current Working with Children Check (Nillumbik needs to be nominated as your current volunteer provider)

 

POLICIES:

  • Conduct yourself according to Living & Learning Nillumbik values and code of conduct.
  • Comply with the Nillumbik Volunteer Handbook and Code of Conduct
  • Comply with relevant legislation and all organizational policies & procedures.
  • Ensure all participants are aware of the OH&S obligations to provide a safe environment for all to participate and model good OH&S practices at all times

The Community Program Handbook forms part of this agreement and provides greater detail on the above responsibilities.

 

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Suitable protective clothing should be wore: e.g. closed footwear, gloves, long sleeves, hat, sunscreen and dust-mask for turning compost or spreading mulch.
  • Animal and insects in the garden. Look before you lift up anything that may have a hiding place for spiders. Cautiously enter areas with dense coverage and weeds.
  • Safe practice when using hand tools. Put them out of others’ way/ in storage when not in use.
  • Taking care to do things within your own physical limits e.g. when lifting or digging
