Breast Cancer Haven, Wessex

Mission Statement

Your help through the toughest times

Breast Cancer Haven is the charity that supports women through their breast cancer treatment. When breast cancer tries to rob a woman of her individuality, her confidence or her strength, we provide the tailored package of emotional, physical and practical support that helps her hold on to them.

We support women and their families via a network of six welcoming centres around the UK and through an expanding network of other services.

We're there to provide women with breast cancer the support that treatment alone can't.

How we do it

We offer advice on practical things like money and work, help combatting stress, exhaustion and nausea, advice on healthy eating and exercise. And above all, there will always be someone to talk to about your deepest fears.

Our trained professional nurses, therapists, counsellors and advisers listen to your individual concerns and give you all the practical, emotional and physical support you need in a tailor-made package.

Our support is free of charge and available in our beautiful Breast Cancer Haven centres – which are as far away from a hospital environment as you can imagine.

Each visitor to Breast Cancer Haven can expect to receive up to ten free hours' of supportive therapy time. In addition, you will also receive two hours' of nurse specialist time at the beginning and end of your tailored programme.

Our free support is also available to men who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Family members

Family members and close friends of people that have been diagnosed with breast cancer can access up to four hours' of free counselling.

Anyone can come – whether you’ve just been diagnosed, having treatment or in recovery. There is no need for a doctor’s referral. So just contact us, make an appointment and we will take it from there.

If you can't get to one of our Breast Cancer Haven centres help is also available over the telephone, through our self-help films on this website or via our Haven at Home DVD which you can order free of charge from our shop.

The type and demand for services has changed over the years and today we maintain some 150 volunteers helping Guildford residents in need.

Lifts to Doctors Surgeries, Dentists, Clinics, Clubs and Day Centres. We can also take you to Hospitals and to visit relatives in nursing homes. We do not go to hairdressers

Shopping

We shop on a weekly or fortnightly basis for anyone who is housebound. We can also shop on a temporary basis, for example when someone first comes out of hospital.

Odd Jobs

We help with small one off jobs around the home such as putting up simple shelves or curtain rails, moving heavy furniture or changing a light bulb for those with limited mobility. We do not undertake housework, plumbing, gardening or electrical repairs.

Crossroads Care Surrey

Mission Statement

Crossroads Care is Surrey's leading charity providing respite care support to Carers. We've been working across Surrey for over 30 years, with our core purpose being to improve the quality of life of unpaid carers and those they are caring for.

COVID-19 Emergency Response

As a result of Coronavirus, Crossroads swiftly implemented a response by providing essential shopping and prescription collection services to carers and to other vulnerable people that were isolated at home. We provided regular wellbeing calls to check in on people to see how they were coping and to offer support with shopping. We're now developing a volunteer based Outreach Support and Telephone Befriending with Digital Tech project largely in response to Covid, but which enable us to continue to support people who need it with shopping and prescription collections, and also with support in learning and using digital technology.  We are seeking new volunteers who are interested in providing Outreach Support and / or Telephone or Digital Befriending.

As an Outreach Support Volunteer you would support people living in the same borough as yourself with shopping and prescription collections. We would provide you with appropriate PPE and pay any related fuel costs.

As a Befriender you would support carers and other older people, or those being cared for, who are feeling isolated and alone and who would benefit from having someone to speak to simply to chat about life, the weather, local services and events etc. We're interested in hearing from volunteers who are relatively IT savvy and would be able to connect to our Cloud based phone system to make telephone or virtual calls to clients. We'd also like volunteers to get involved with an exciting new Befriending with digital tech project, through which you would be able to support people in learning to use, or building confidence in using laptops, smart phones and tablets. Even if you're not computer savvy, but would benefit from being a befriender yourself, please get in touch.

We're also looking for new Trustee's to join us now, so if you're interested in supporting us in leading the development of respite services for carers in Surrey, please enquire through our website www.crossroadscaresurrey.org.uk

We are also always looking for people that are interested in other volunteering roles, including by offering support in care or club settings, in the community or in the head office.

If you are interested in becoming part of our Surrey wide team and being involved in providing support to your community, please email us at enquiries@crossroadscaresurrey.org.uk to request a volunteer pack.

We'd love to hear from you... if you have a good understanding of what it's like to be a carer and are looking to give something back through volunteering.

Guildford Sea Cadets

Mission Statement

We are a very well established Sea Cadet unit that has been in operation since 1942. We were recognised in 2010 as one of the best units in the southern area. This is not only because of our central location, right in the heart of Guildford, but because of our ethos and commitment to provide top notch activities for young people.

Our superb location, perched on the banks of the River Wey near the National Trust's Dapdune Wharf, is so close to the water that you can touch it. And this fits well with our aim; to give young people the opportunity to get out onto the water, gain confidence and have a lot of laughs at the same time.

We want to keep our cadets active both on an off the water. Long evenings in the Summer months mean loads of time on the water: Kayaking, sailing, rowing and driving power boats. Then when the nights draw cold and you think that all we can do is in a classroom you find we keep active: rock climbing, leadership games and activities and sports games.

We currently have 65 cadets, male and female aged between 10 and 18, of whom 16 are Royal Marine Cadets.

We have a wide range of facilities and instructional staff which means we can offer you the opportunity to learn new skills in a safe environment whilst having loads of fun!

Once residents come to live with us we want them to have the best possible quality of life and for it to be the last time they ever have to move. In order to achieve this we need volunteers to help us.

I cannot stress the importance of this time in peoples lives, so we try to make it as good as possible at the end of their life.

Home-Start Guildford

Mission Statement

Parents Supporting Other Parents - a simple idea that really works!

Home-Start Guildford has been supporting families for more than 20 years.  We are a charity and voluntary organisation that aims to prevent family crisis or breakdown by offering regular volunteer support to parents who are under stress with at least one child under the age of 5, usually referred to us by Health Visitors.

We recruit and train volunteers who are parents themselves, to visit the families at home for a few hours once a week and offer them informal, friendly and confidential support, as well as practical help.

This support is aimed to help parents grow in confidence, strengthen their relationships with their children and widen their links with the local community.  Ultimately this support helps the children have the best possible start in life.

Rosamund Guildford Community Garden

Mission Statement

Our garden in the sweeping hills of the North Downs overlooking Guildford and its surrounding countryside are home to many species. We are working together with the Wildlife Trust and Guildford Environmental Forum, planting hedges and trees and we are currently planning to improve and extend our existing pond area to include a bog garden and boardwalk. In the food garden we grow a variety of flowers to attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, we also leave some areas wild which allows the wildflowers and grasses to undergo their natural life cycles and provide homes for the bugs, beetles and spiders that are the natural predators to many of the pest of cultivated food crops. We have incorporated permaculture principles into our garden to preserve the balance of nature and often use companion planting so we can manage pests without the need for the pesticides which are so commonly used elsewhere. Our no-dig methods and use of green manures maintain the soil integrity, allowing the vital mycellium to remain intact to transport sugars to the plants. In the meadows outside the food garden there are over 100 different species of plant like wild orchids. Many animals like Skylarks and other birds also live their lives and breed in the sky, ground, hedges, trees and meadows around the food garden. We have an active badger sett and regular fox visitors as well as hedgehogs and slow-worms.

Aims and Objectives

We are a registered charity whose volunteers aim to provide a forum for debate about the issues affecting our town and borough.

1/ We are interested in following issues that affect our town and surrounding area:

  • Conserving the best of Guildford Town, Urban Area, Villages and Countryside
  • Promoting high standards of planning and architecture
  • Influencing the pace and type of development for the future
  • Raising the public awareness on issues related to our Built Environment, Heritage and Future
  • Identifying, integrating and considering matters that impact across the borough e.g. Transport Flows.

2/ Our Scope

  • Geographically we concentrate on Guildford Town and Urban Area but maintain an active interest on major matters affecting the whole of the borough and beyond.
  • We recognise areas in the borough have active and effective local groups whose work we don’t wish to replicate.

3/ We have some key principles:

  • We recognise Guildford and environs will continue to develop and evolve to meet the needs of the population, and this needs to be managed.
  • Guildford should remain a proper town, not just a commuter town for London, so we need to support economic activity, our world class educational facilities, and provide a wide range of public facilities e.g. Theatres, Entertainment Venues, Galleries, Meeting Places, Public Realm etc.
  • The area needs to be ‘competitive’ with other South East areas in the Arc formed by Cambridge – Oxford – Guildford – Redhill - Ashford.
  • Guildford and environs should aspire to be a leader in preserving heritage assets and surrounding countryside whilst enabling vibrant and sensitive development.
  • Environment will be a key consideration including:
  • Measures to encourage modal transport shift, pollution reduction, reduction in traffic congestion.
  • Measures to encourage alternative energy, management/recycling of waste and flood protection.
  • The town and its surroundings need to be better linked in a sustainable manner, including making public transport accessible and attractive.
  • Guildford and environs should be a borough for all and thus should provide affordable accommodation for all age groups.
  • We will actively seek to collaborate with other relevant groups on matters of common interest.

Woodlands and Hillbrow Ltd (Farnham)

Mission Statement

Woodlands and hillbrow were set up as a family care homes. We now have a day centre specialising in dementia and a nursing home called Hill House.  The homes are all run along the same core principle of dignity, respect, courage and caring people as though they are our own family.

Once residents come to live with us we want them to have the best possible quality of life and it to be the last time they ever have to move. In order to achieve this we need volunteers to help us.

I cannot stress the importance of this time in peoples lives, once we have done something it can never be put right, so we try to make it as good as possible at the end of their life.
