- Zero Carbon Guildford

About Zero

                                                         

Zero Carbon Guildford is a charity set up to enable local community action to tackle the climate and ecological crisis and associated social issues.

Zero carbon Guildford is also about to set up a 'Community Hub', in the centre of Guildford, to enable the community to come together to tackle these issues.  

The Hub will include a zero-waste shop, café, climate cinema and meeting/exhibition space and will showcase ways local people can make changes to help Guildford's journey towards a zero carbon future. 

Volunteer with Zero

Event Steward

A Volunteer Event Steward is part of a team who are responsible for ensuring larger events at ZERO (our building in the Centre of Guildford) run smoothly.

The responsibilities of the Volunteer Event Steward team may include:

  • Setting up ZERO for an event.
  • Directing guests around the building.
  • Providing information to guests.
  • Serving refreshments.
  • Clearing down ZERO after an event. Events Stewards will work with the on-duty Venue Custodian to help ensure the smooth running of ZERO.

  • The chance to build contacts and friendships with like minded people in the Guildford environmental community.

Desirable skills, experience and qualities (Ideally, the candidate will possess at least some of the following skills, experience and qualities):

  • Desire to be part of the ZERO team
  • Interest in environmental, climate and ecological matters.

Hours: Ad-hoc, depending on availability and ZERO event programme

Location: ZERO - Guildford town centre

Expenses: Reasonable travel expenses via public transport

Venue Custodian

A Venue Custodian responsible for helping the ZERO team run a welcoming, efficient venue. The responsibilities of a Venue Custodian may include:

● Showing prospective users around the space.

● Meeting and greeting booked users of the space.

● Running through fire, health & safety briefings with users of the space.

● Setting up room layouts as per each booking’s requirements

● Ensuring groups have tidied up after themselves and left the venue shipshape.

● Checking and cleaning communal areas and facilities, including checking stock levels for e.g. hand soap, loo roll, cleaning products.

During larger events, and at busier times, the Venue Custodian may be responsible for managing a small team of Event Steward volunteers. Event Stewards will assist the Venue Custodian to ensure the smooth running of events at ZERO

1st Stoughton Scouts

Mission Statement

1st Stoughton Scout Group has been running since 1909 and has witnessed a variety of changes in the area and within Scouting.

We offer Scouting for young people between the ages of 6 to 18 in the Stoughton area of Guildford. The Group has over a 100 members and provides a varied programme of activities to its members.

The Group is run by an Executive Committee made up of Leaders and non uniform members. They help ensure we bring great Scouting to the young people of Stoughton.

MacularSociety

Mission Statement

The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We have more than 21,000 members and, as the biggest membership group in the sight loss sector, we are the voice of people with macular conditions. We provide information and support to improve the lives of people with macular disease and to ensure no one has to face it alone. We have around 300 Macular Society support groups around the UK and beyond, run by volunteers. We have a helpline as well as befriending and counselling services and we offer one-to-one training in skills to make the best use of remaining vision. Marie Curie Nurses are available in every village, town and city throughout the UK, caring for terminally ill patients who wish to die in comfortable and familiar surroundings at home with their families. Last year in Surrey, our nurses worked over 10,000 hours, through the night and day, caring for many local people. This comes at a cost to the charity of £20 for each hour a Marie Curie Nurse is in the home. This is why collections are so important to us.

Medical Cadet Training Corps

MCTC Mission Statement

The Medical Cadet Training Corps provides an environment where young people can learn, practice, focus, enjoy, feel safe and develop leadership skills in the following subjects, Military knowledge of the field gun, Physical fitness, social skills and extensive first aid training, we are also keen on teaching cadets ethical decision making and providing help to the community. The MCTC is able to reach at-risk young people and offer much needed care and support. For these aspirations to become reality however, it is essential that the MCTC is seen to be firmly rooted within the life of the wider community, and supported by all organisations, businesses, charities, schools, the local authority and anyone that is there to support children in our community, and that wherever possible, young people are provided with the opportunity to participate in the life of that community. Through the programmes, activities and ethos of the MCTC, the officers and instructors guide and support young people and act as mentors and role models in their personal, social and physical development. The programmes that the MCTC provides will create opportunity for the young people to develop into mature and responsible adults who will play an important role within their communities and wider society.

Puttenham Barn is run by a small environmental charity called Project Oasis North Downs (POND).

Its mission is to provide simple inexpensive overnight accommodation in a 250 year old barn, in an environmentally responsible way.

It is aimed at walkers, cyclists & people enjoying the surrounding beautiful countryside.

The Barn has many environmental features including solar panels (on its bike shed!), rainwater harvesting & local varieties of apple trees in the garden.

We aim to open at weekends, during school holidays and on as many other nights as we can between Easter & October.

Quick Response Memorial Woodland (Woking)

 We are a registered charity created by a dedicated team of volunteers whose main purpose is to support and raise funds to assist ex-service personnel immediately when they find themselves in times of difficulty.  This is done by holding various events and the generous donations and goodwill of supporters. We run a memorial woodland which is lovingly tended to by our Founder and Chair, Paul ‘The Hat’ Cooling, and a team of volunteers. Rainbow Trust provides emotional and practical support for families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

 This support comes from Family Support Workers who perform a role most people couldn’t imagine.  They maintain a sense of normality for the family by helping with hospital trips, performing household duties, taking the siblings to school and in many cases providing care during the final stages of a child’s life, helping with funeral arrangements and bereavement support.

Rainbow Trust has nine care teams across England in Surrey, North East London and Essex, Central London, West London, County Durham, Cumbria, Manchester, Swindon and Southampton. Last year they supported 1,361 families.

Rainbow Trust's vision is that one day all terminally ill children and their families will have access to a Rainbow Trust Carer.
