We believe that creativity helps us make sense of the world, bring people together and has the potential to articulate new ideas. By encouraging people to participate in the arts, as audience and makers, we will foster a healthier, happier and safer contemporary Britain.

Our activity is underpinned by the following values:

partnership
Identifying shared ambition is a key characteristic of how we work. This requires generosity, clarity of purpose and confidence. We will continue to identity new relationships an ways of working to increase the impact and range of our work.

equal opportunity
We work at making all of our activity transparent and fair. We retain an instinct for working with these that have least access to our work and in monitoring the ways in which we make choices.

playfulness
We believe that for us to thrive we need to adapt and respond to the world around us, exploring new ways of reaching new audiences in new places. This requires us to see change as inevitable, investing in staff, adapting our buildings, listening and hearing, looking and seeing.

children & young people
Our preference is not to treat children and young people as a distinct group of people but ensure that they are integrated within our activate. We will continue to encourage young people as makers/creators and audiences.

sustainability
Of paramount importance is that we remain open to opportunity but prepared to say no if we feel compromised, over stretched or that an offer places unreasonable demand on our own resources.

international
We will test all our activities against inter nation ambition – from the artist’ studio programmes, to the choice of work, to the partnerships we develop and the opportunities we pursue.

Home-Start Guildford

Mission Statement

Parents Supporting Other Parents - a simple idea that really works!

Home-Start Guildford has been supporting local families across the Guildford Borough for over 25 years.

We're a non-judgemental organisations that helps any parent who is struggling, for any reason. Some of those reasons may include; multiple births, mental health, an abusive partner, isolation, mental or physical handicap, or the pressure that loss of employment brings to a family.

What we do

Our charity provides a preventative service that aims to support families who are struggling by offering regular volunteer support to parents with at least one child under the age of 5, usually referred to us by Health Visitors.

We provide one-to-one support for parents:
Our volunteers visit the family’s home for a couple of hours every week.  They tailor-make their support to the needs of the parents and children. Volunteers are very committed and will keep visiting until the youngest child turns five or starts school, or until the parents feel they can stand on their own two feet.  Parents and volunteers often develop a deeply trusting relationship which can lead to powerful change within the family.

We also run two family groups for referred families, one in the Pirbright Community Centre and the other in the Guildford Family Group, Hazel Avenue.

Our values

  • We offer families choice
  • We work in partnership - with each other, with families and with other agencies,
  • We work in a spirit of openness, encouragement and enjoyment
  • We are flexible and responsive to the needs of families.

Volunteering Opportunities

There are several ways that you can help in a voluntary capacity:

  • by supporting a family as a home-visiting volunteer
  • by helping at one of our Family Groups
  • by joining the Trustee Board
  • by becoming a Friend of Home-Start Guildford

Please see the volunteer roles listed for more detail.

Rainbow Trust provides emotional and practical support for families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.

This support comes from Family Support Workers who perform a role most people couldn’t imagine.  They maintain a sense of normality for the family by helping with hospital trips, performing household duties, taking the siblings to school and in many cases providing care during the final stages of a child’s life, helping with funeral arrangements and bereavement support.

Rainbow Trust has nine care teams across England in Surrey, North East London and Essex, Central London, West London, County Durham, Cumbria, Manchester, Swindon and Southampton. Last year they supported 1,361 families.

Rainbow Trust's vision is that one day all terminally ill children and their families will have access to a Rainbow Trust Carer.

Mission Statement

Shooting Star Children's Hospices is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families.

Whether lives are measured in days, weeks, months or years, we are here to make every moment count. We support families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care.

Our bespoke support is free of charge to families and available 365 days a year. Our care service includes emergency respite care, symptom management and end-of-life care at Christopher's hospice in Guildford and a comprehensive range of therapies and support groups for the whole family at Shooting Star House in Hampton,

It costs £10 million a year just to maintain our current level of care and, with around 30% of our income coming from government funding, we rely on our supporters’ generosity to keep the service running. What’s more, we know there are many more families desperate for our vital support, so it’s crucial we raise more funds to provide more care.

We have volunteer opportunities at our hospices and at our shops.   Volunteers roles are very varied and include helping on reception, in the kitchen, housekeeping, gardening, pool watching, admin, fundraising, shops and at our events.

Mission Statement

The Spike Heritage Centre is one of the few buildings remaining from Guildford's Workhouse in the Poor Law era, which housed the forgotten classes of Victorian England.  The Vagrants and Casual Ward, known as The Spike was built in 1906 to house vagrants and low paid workers.  After the Poor Laws ended in 1929, it continued as a night hostel until the mid 1960s. The NHS took over the site becoming St Lukes Hospital, operational until the mid 1990s when the new Royal Surrey hospital was opened.  The majority of the workhouse site was redeveloped, but due to the efforts of local campaigners, the Casual Ward was saved and remains as a historic building with lots of stories to tell. Individual visitors and groups are welcome to explore this unique building with guides providing the insight about how the poor were treated in a bygone age.
