At Demelza, we are committed to delivering extraordinary care to extraordinary children facing serious or life-limiting conditions. Our Practical Support volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining outdoor spaces for children and their families to enjoy, taking away some of the everyday pressures they experience.

As a Practical Support Gardening Volunteer, you will:

  • Visit families local to you that need help maintaining outdoor spaces
  • Help with general garden tasks such as mowing, weeding, pruning and planting.
  • Engage with family members and provide a supportive ear for them as an ambassador for Demelza.
  • Feedback to the Practical Support team on your visits, ensuring any needs of the family are recorded.

Our Practical Support volunteers are also able to help families with decorating, DIY, cleaning and organising – if you have other skills you would like to use then you can help with more tasks if you would like to.

All Practical Support volunteers will have an initial interview with a member of the team, followed by a full training course for volunteering with Demelza families. You will then receive a face to face induction, as well as ongoing support and supervision from the team.

All volunteers helping with Demelza families are also required to undertake an Enhanced DBS check before starting the role.

 

Help local families with decorating and DIY

 

Join Demelza’s team of Practical Support volunteers to decorate rooms for local families.

Are you passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of children and families facing challenging times? Do you have a knack for turning ordinary spaces into extraordinary places that Demelza children and families could enjoy? If so, we would love for you to join our dedicated team of Practical Support volunteers to transform rooms for our children, young people and families with your decorating skills!

As a practical support volunteer, you will:

  • Collaborate with children, young people and families to understand their preferences and needs before decorating a room
  • Use your decorating skills to transform rooms to a high standard so families can spend time in safe, beautiful spaces.
  • Engage with family members and provide a supportive ear for them as an ambassador for Demelza.
  • Feedback to the Practical Support team on your visits, ensuring any needs of the family are recorded.

Our Practical Support volunteers are also able to help families with gardening, DIY, cleaning and organising – if you have other skills you would like to use then you can help with more tasks if you would like to.

You do not need to have any professional decorating experience to be able to help the team, however we do ask that you are proficient in the task and comfortable with basic decorating to help. We will take you preferences and skills into account to make sure you only undertake decorating tasks you’re comfortable with.

Driving Volunteer

Do you enjoy driving and want to find a fulfilling way to give back to your community? If so, we would love you to become a Volunteer Driver for Demelza!

 

As a Volunteer Driver, you can play a crucial role in ensuring that children and families can access the care and services they need.

 

Our amazing team of volunteers help transport children, young people and families to and from medical appointments, to the hospice buildings for day care and short breaks, and to activities they may not normally have been able to attend. Our drivers also help Demelza to deliver essential equipment, therapy bags, and seasonal treats such as Easter Eggs and Christmas presents!

 

Our driving role is really flexible and there is no minimum or maximum amount of support required – whatever journeys you can help with make a massive difference.

 

You can use your own vehicle for some journeys provided it meets insurance requirements. Alternatively, Demelza has a small number of cars, wheelchair accessible vehicles and a minibus that volunteers can use.

 

🤝 Requirements:

  • Full valid drivers licence held for 2 years and aged over 21
  •  Enhanced DBS check, references and training course for volunteering with families must be completed with Demelza before starting
  • Undertake ongoing training and support meetings with Demelza throughout your role to ensure you are safe whilst volunteering
  • Maintain any MOT and Insurance requirements if you are using your own vehicle for any driving for Demelza.

 

 

Your time and dedication will directly improve the lives of children and families in your community, taking away the stress of transport and travel so they can concentrate on the needs of the child and family.

Practical Support in the home volunteering

 

Make a Meaningful Difference to Demelza families in your community!

If you enjoy cleaning, organising and helping others, we would love you to join our team of dedicated Practical Support volunteers who visit local families to help with household tasks such as cleaning, tidying and laundry to help keep on top of day-to-day pressures families face, allowing families to focus on what matters most - spending quality time together.

 

🧹 As a Practical Support Volunteer, you will:

  • Perform light housekeeping tasks, such as cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, and laundry.
  • Create organised and tidy living space for families
  • Help families maintain a safe and clean environment at home so they can focus on spending time together as a family.
  • Engage with family members and provide a supportive ear for them as an ambassador for Demelza.
  • Feedback to the Practical Support team on your visits, ensuring any needs of the family are recorded.

Our Practical Support volunteers are also able to help families with decorating, DIY, and gardening– if you have other skills you would like to use then you can help with more tasks if you would like to.
