Disaster Aid Canada

Mission Statement

At the Soap for Hope Program of Disaster Aid Canada, we are dedicating to meeting the hygiene needs of the needy in our community, here on Vancouver Island and abroad in disaster relief. Two years ago, our Executive Director, Anne McIntyre, was collecting lightly or unused hygiene products from hotels to send overseas in Disaster Aid kits when she asked herself if there was a need for these soaps here in Victoria. She quickly discovered that the answer was not only yes, but many shelters had no budget for hygiene products. This means that if they need to buy soap, then this money has to be diverted from food or other essential programs.

In the last two years, we have grown to service 26 different shelters/ transitional houses or community centers on Vancouver Island. By diverting hygiene products such as shampoos, bar soaps and lotions that would normally be thrown into the trash, we have been able to help homeless individuals regain their dignity and health while protecting the environment.

Our Mission

To provide and assist in delivering humanitarian aid, shelter, sustainable water systems and hygiene products to people affected by natural and other disasters, or with compelling local need.

How We Fulfill Our Mission

By collecting lightly used or unused products from the hotel and accommodations industry, we divert waste from landfills and help people in need. Our service to the community means we connect and build relationships in the accommodations industry and those organizations that service homeless or at-risk individuals. We process these products to make sure they are clean and organized to make the biggest impact, then arrange for delivery or pick up to our local community or to send overseas.

Rainbow Health Cooperative

Mission Statement

We are a community owned and operated - not for profit health co-operative. We are chartered under the laws of British Columbia. We are trans-centric and queer-inclusive.  Our focus is helping gender non-conforming / trans (gnc/t) people. Our principle service is to support gnc/t groups in all areas and build a common network between them that is owned and managed by them. Where no group exists, we help the community start one. We believe it vital to our wellbeing to:

  • Be informed about our health and our choices regarding it
  • Develop communities of self-care where we assist each other in our common wellness
  • Represent ourselves collectively with organizations that provide services to the gnc/t community.

We accomplish this by developing and sharing knowledge about informed service providers, caring for each other in peer support groups, and advocating on health issues through our membership in a common organization. Our co-op makes our voices one. We use government support when we can get it, but are never dependent on it

We have a seven member board who represent the five regional health regions, a First Nations board member, and a one elected separately by our groups. Each director is elected by Co-op members of the region or community they represent. The following information is about how our co-op groups work and explains how you get started to register a new group.

Women In Need - WIN

Mission Statement

At Victoria Women In Need Community Cooperative (WIN), we support women along their journey between crisis, financial self sufficiency and wellness. Our programs are there for women along each step of their journey.

We are there when she is in crisis and needs to access essential goods, we are there when she is setting up her own home after leaving a transition house, we are there when she is building a strong community of support. And finally, when she is ready, we are there to provide training, education and financial support to help her achieve her goals of financial self sufficiency and wellness.

How do we do this? We collect donated goods and provide affordable high quality clothing, household items and furniture through three Resale Shops in Victoria. The revenue from our shops, together with financial donations, covers the entire cost of running our non profit cooperative, and funds our empowerment programs for women. So whether you are a shopper or a donor, you too have a hand in transforming our community.
