Anawim House

Mission Statement

The Anawim Companion Society, which serves our community through Anawim House, was founded on the following guiding beliefs and principles:

A. Poverty
Poverty is a condition of our shared humanity. Physical, emotional, spiritual and social poverty exists at all levels of human society. Often poverty is unacknowledged and remains unchallenged. Such poverty leaves one feeling empty, powerless, alienated and in despair.

B. Core Belief
Beyond the face of poverty, there exists a whole person worthy of dignity, equality and unconditional love who needs to be accepted and reunited to humanity. We believe absolutely in the value of each human being to creatively live out his or her life.

C. Rights
Every person has the right to self-determination, mutual participation and love. If for any reason an individual cannot participate wholly in society, that person retains the right to belong with respect in a safe, healthy and caring environment. Poverty and its effects do not give us the right to impose judgment or limitations upon the poor.

D. Responsibilities
We are guardians of one another and the responsibility to respond to human poverty belongs equally to us all. We confront poverty as a human condition that can be understood, alleviated and healed. The pain and suffering of poverty must be met with compassion, companionship, generous giving and social action if it is to be reduced or eliminated. Each of us has been granted remarkable gifts and blessings that must be shared for the benefit of all.

E. Action
Poverty and its effects can only be alleviated by healing the whole person. We are dedicated to overcoming poverty by becoming compassionate companions with the poor while providing for their needs. We offer friendship for friendship. Our commitment to fulfill this mission will reduce the powerlessness, suffering and alienation of poverty.

Disaster Aid Canada

Mission Statement

At the Soap for Hope Program of Disaster Aid Canada, we are dedicating to meeting the hygiene needs of the needy in our community, here on Vancouver Island and abroad in disaster relief. Two years ago, our Executive Director, Anne McIntyre, was collecting lightly or unused hygiene products from hotels to send overseas in Disaster Aid kits when she asked herself if there was a need for these soaps here in Victoria. She quickly discovered that the answer was not only yes, but many shelters had no budget for hygiene products. This means that if they need to buy soap, then this money has to be diverted from food or other essential programs.

In the last two years, we have grown to service 26 different shelters/ transitional houses or community centers on Vancouver Island. By diverting hygiene products such as shampoos, bar soaps and lotions that would normally be thrown into the trash, we have been able to help homeless individuals regain their dignity and health while protecting the environment.

Our Mission

To provide and assist in delivering humanitarian aid, shelter, sustainable water systems and hygiene products to people affected by natural and other disasters, or with compelling local need.

How We Fulfill Our Mission

By collecting lightly used or unused products from the hotel and accommodations industry, we divert waste from landfills and help people in need. Our service to the community means we connect and build relationships in the accommodations industry and those organizations that service homeless or at-risk individuals. We process these products to make sure they are clean and organized to make the biggest impact, then arrange for delivery or pick up to our local community or to send overseas.

Mission Statement

We are HepCBC, the Hepatitis C Education and Prevention Society! We are a non-profit organization run by and for people infected and/or affected by hepatitis C (HCV).

Our mission is to provide education, prevention and support to those living with hepatitis C (HCV).

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, an estimated 242,500 Canadians (maybe many more) are currently infected with hepatitis C. Did you know 30 to 70% of Canadians infected with hepatitis C don’t know that they are infected? Hepatitis C is a serious liver disease that people may live with for years, even decades, without any idea that they have it. Unfortunately, by the time symptoms appear, the liver may already have undergone significant damage.  Treatment can be extremely challenging to access, and some treatments have incredibly severe side effects. Help us to raise awareness and support those infected or affected by hepatitis C!

Women In Need - WIN

Mission Statement

At Victoria Women In Need Community Cooperative (WIN), we support women along their journey between crisis, financial self sufficiency and wellness. Our programs are there for women along each step of their journey.

We are there when she is in crisis and needs to access essential goods, we are there when she is setting up her own home after leaving a transition house, we are there when she is building a strong community of support. And finally, when she is ready, we are there to provide training, education and financial support to help her achieve her goals of financial self sufficiency and wellness.

How do we do this? We collect donated goods and provide affordable high quality clothing, household items and furniture through three Resale Shops in Victoria. The revenue from our shops, together with financial donations, covers the entire cost of running our non profit cooperative, and funds our empowerment programs for women. So whether you are a shopper or a donor, you too have a hand in transforming our community.
