Volunteer Opportunities

55+ Social Drop-in Program Host

Social Program Hosts are reliable and welcoming additions to Saanich Recreation Centres who help older adults enjoy regular social connections in a public space. Duties include preparing light refreshments and facilitating games, activities, and conversations.

Responsibilities:

  • Open and prepare the program room (make coffee/tea/snacks, set up games, put out attendance list and nametags)
  • Greet participants by name as they arrive
  • Facilitate new participants by:
    • Introducing them to ongoing participants
    • Asking them questions
    • Exploring the activities together
    • Inviting them to come back
  • Promote a welcoming environment by:
    • Connecting with all participants
    • Ensuring the space remains accessible and equitable to all participants
    • Relaying program feedback to staff
    • Directing questions you can’t answer to the right person (reception, program supervisor)
  • Close the program room (put away games/crafts, put refreshments back in cupboards/fridge/freezer, compost scraps, clean dishes by hand or load/turn on the dishwasher, wipe counters)

Qualifications:

  • 19 years old or older
  • Friendly, patient, and empathetic
  • Genuinely interested in interacting with older adults
  • Committed to creating a welcoming space for all cultural backgrounds, abilities, and genders
  • Able to work independently with limited on-site supervision
  • Proficient with spoken English (other language skills are an asset)
  • Willing to complete a Police Information Check

Commitment and schedule:

This position requires a weekly commitment for a minimum of three months. Consistent attendance is required, however we can accommodate appointments and vacations with advance notice. We are recruiting volunteers for the following shifts:

  • Tuesdays from 12:30pm - 2:45pm at Gordon Head Recreation Centre
  • Wednesdays from 9:00am - 11:45am at G.R. Pearkes Recreation Centre 

Working Conditions:  

This program occurs indoors. Volunteers will be in close proximity with others and will need to sit, stand, and move around during the program. This role may involve working independently or with another volunteer (staff is always available if needed).

Special Events Assistant

Throughout the year, Saanich hosts a variety of special events in the community. Whether you're preparing decorations for Autumn Lantern Fest, leading crafts at Family Arts Fest, or serving up ice cream at Strawberry Fest, you are bound to have a memorable volunteer experience at these vibrant community gatherings.

Tennis Program Assistant

The Tennis Program Assistant supports instructors in delivering fun tennis programs that help participants develop new skills. This role is ideal for those who enjoy working with children and youth, are patient with new learners, and have a love for tennis. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with program set-up and clean-up
  • Assist with transitions between activities
  • Assist participants with their skill development, as directed by staff 
  • Wear appropriate clothing (including athletic shoes)

Qualifications:

  • 16 years old or older
  • Friendly, outgoing, and patient
  • Prior experience in tennis
  • Able to lift up to 30lbs
  • Proficient in the English language
  • Tennis Canada Instructor Certification an asset

Commitment:

Minimum of one weekly shift for 6-8 weeks. 

Working Conditions: 

Indoors. Standing, moving, and playing throughout session. Lifting up to 30lbs may be required. Supervised by Saanich staff.

Shadow Swim Instructor

The Shadow Swim Instructor is responsible for observing and assisting the instruction of general recreational aquatics programs.  This volunteer position is intended for those who have certification or are in progress of completing co-teach hours.

Responsibilities:  

  • Assist Swim Instructor with activities, as directed
  • Welcome, engage and interact with participants
  • Interact cooperatively with instructors
  • Ensure participants are following the facility rules
  • Ensure the facility and equipment is in safe, working condition

Qualifications:

  • 15 years old or older
  • Current certification as a Swim For Life Instructor with the Livesaving Society
  • Enthusiastic, organized, and willing to learn
  • Excellent communicator
  • Enjoys working with children and able to hold appropriate boundaries when interacting with them
  • Proficient in the English Language
  • Willing to complete a Police Information Check

Commitment and Schedule:

Dependent on swimming lessons schedule.

Working Conditions:

Indoor pool facility. On dryland and in pool. Supervised by staff.

Shadow Lifeguard

Shadow Lifeguards gain meaningful experience supervising the pool deck, assisting with First Aid, learning about equipment and deck set ups, meeting facility specific needs, working on activities to improve their skills as Lifeguards, and being part of a dynamic team. As supervisors mentor and evaluate their contributions, volunteers in this role may have the opportunity to become employed as Lifeguards with Saanich Recreation.

Responsibilities:

  • Commit to regular shift attendance
  • Attend an orientation session
  • Assist with First Aid
  • Welcome, engage, and interact with patrons and staff
  • Supervise water and pool deck

Qualifications:

  • 15 years old or older
  • Current NL - Pool and Waterpark Option Awards
  • Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C; AMOA
  • Excellent communicator
  • Enjoy working with children and able to hold appropriate boundaries when interacting with them
  • Enthusiastic, organized, and willing to learn
  • Proficient in the English Language
  • Willing to complete a Police Information Check

Commitment and Schedule:

One Fun Swim shift per week (2-3 hours)
