Advisory Council

Looking for enthusiastic, inspirational, community minded individuals with diverse professional backgrounds, knowledge, experience, talents, perspective and networking skills. Individuals who are attentive stewards, a source of inspiration and are willing fundraisers.

The advisory council is consists of these selected community leaders, who are charged with the responsibility of advising and assisting the local Salvation Army in planning and supporting the daily activities that meet the needs in the communities surrounding of Northern Madison County.

The men and women on the advisory council serve as committee chairs for finance, program, community relations, fundraising/development, properties, emergency disaster and social services which meet once a month.

Community Service Hours

From time to time community individuals may be assigned Community Service Hours from local agencies. The Salvation Army can help you complete those hours through many areas such as general custodial work and general office work.

Emergency Disaster Services (EDS)

There are many reasons why people in need seek the shield of The Salvation Army. They know that in a crisis our trained volunteers will be there able to provide the necessary assistance and comfort to make it through any emergency or disaster.

Whether that disaster should happen to you or your neighbor and it is natural or caused by man, Salvation Army volunteers have been ready to answer an emergency. Since 1900, volunteers have responded to local, national and international disasters such as fires, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and acts of terrorism.

When you become an EDS volunteer, you will receive introductory training to emergency disaster services. Afterward, based upon your areas of interest and ability there are intermediate and advanced level courses available.

Seasonal Assistance

The Salvation Army provides Thanksgiving and Christmas Assistance to less fortunate families.

The volunteer opportunities avaliable for Seasonal Assistance include helping families fill out assistance applications, filling angel tree gift bags and visiting with clients as they come to pick up their gifts.

EMERGENCY SOCIAL SERVICES (ESS)

The Salvation Army Emergency Social Services Program bridges a gap for families and individuals by meeting their emergency and basic needs while they are working through their temporary financial crisis.

After assessing clients’ needs, Salvation Army caseworkers provide and assistance package to help clients during temporary setbacks. Part of that package may include referrals to other agencies, which have forged partnerships with The Salvation Army.

Services, based upon available funding, include assistance with mortgage/rent payments, utilities, clothing, groceries/meals, disaster recovery, funeral expenses, furniture, prescriptions and spiritual counseling.

The Salvation Army corps community center is amazingly busy throughout the year – especially around the holidays and times of local disaster. Volunteers are needed to help our front desk staff answer phones, greet clients and assist in light clerical duties. Outgoing personality and the ability to handle customers needed. You must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer. Training is provided.

MAINTENANCE SUPPORT

Throughout the year you can help make the corps community center on inviting and safe environment for those youth, adults and families whom we serve.

The community center is looking for individuals and groups to help with landscaping and lawn care, snow removal, painting, plumbing, electrical work and general cleaning.

Individuals and groups can set the time they wish to volunteer whether that is a block period of time or an hour here and there for just one time or over a set schedule.

TREE OF LIGHTS CAMPAIGN

Tree of Lights is “the major” annual fundraising and public awareness program for The Salvation Army. The campaign kicks-off on November 1st and concludes on December 31st. In addition to this annual appeal for financial support from our communities in the Missouri and Illinois St. Louis Region, individuals, organizations and corporations volunteer by participating in local community events. These programs and activities include: Christmas Tree lightings; Red Kettle bell ringing; Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners; toy distribution to under-privileged children; and can food collection drives.

Our pantry needs you, now! We rely 100% on volunteers to operate the food pantry. Families choose their groceries, dairy, fresh vegetables and fruit, meat, canned goods, and bread. Approximately 1300 persons, from families ranging in size from 1 person to 9, shop each month.

Complete an online volunteer profile. Background check is mandatory at no cost to you, (you must be free of any felony conviction of crime against persons.) It takes 72 hrs to get approval to begin. Once approval has been granted, we will contact you to get you scheduled.

Community Center

The Community Center offers a variety of programs year round including a summer Day Camp program and an After School program. The Community Center also supervises the Kids Eat Free program.

Emergency Disaster Services

Volunteers play a crucial role in disaster response efforts by offering basic needs to those who may have lost everything. The EDS team meets every third Saturday of the month and participates in events to train and keep our skills in practice in case we are needed in a disaster. 

Emergency Food Pantry

The Emergency Food Pantry provides nutritious food for individuals and families in need. 

It operates every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. - noon and from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Harbor House

The Harbor House provides a nurturing and safe place for men that are homeless. This long-term intervention program provides hope and practical assistance to these individuals as they seek to break the cycle of homelessness. Men in this program maintain sobriety, work towards a college education, enter the workforce, receive counseling, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and much more.

Community Center

Position Summary:

The Salvation Army Corps Community Center offers a community meal every week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Anyone is welcome for a free meal and some comradery. Our prayers are to see new friendships made through sharing a meal and playing some friendly yet competitive games. Social interaction is a vital aspect of mental and physical health. Corps Ministry Team [Corps Council]

A Local Officer is a Salvation Army soldier [An enrolled member of the church] appointed to a position of responsibility and authority in a corps [The Salvation Army church]. A Local Officer carries out the duties of one's appointment without remuneration from The Salvation Army.  The Local Officers are the Corps Council Members [ex officio]. The Corps Council advises and assists the Corps Officers in matters concerning the progress and wellbeing of the church.

Emergency Disaster Services

The Salvation Army began offering assistance to disaster survivors after a major hurricane hit Galveston, TX in September 1900, destroying the coastal city and killing thousands of people. At the request of The Salvation Army’s National Commander, officers from across the country moved into the Galveston area to help feed and shelter the thousands of survivors, while also providing much needed emotional and spiritual support.

Since then, The Salvation Army has responded to numerous natural disasters, transportation accidents, civil unrest situations, and terrorist attacks. By providing beverages, snacks, meals, and emotional and spiritual care to first responders and survivors, The Salvation Army strives to bring hope and healing to people who find themselves in the midst of extremely difficult situations.

The Salvation Army is first and foremost a part of the universal catholic church. We follow the Wesleyan-Arminian tradition within the Protestant Reformation. The Salvation Army's origins are from The Church of England. William Booth [Our founder, 1865], was a Methodist preacher filled with compassion for the downtrodden and alcoholics. William Booth recognized the necessity to provide food and water to the whosoever in need. Stability of basic needs provided a catalyst for the whosoever to develop a relationship with Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to make changes in one life.
