Food Bank Distribution Assistant.  If you like helping your community and care about animals, but prefer to work behind the  scenes, this role is a great fit. We need volunteers to help plan and prepare our pet food  supplies for our community outreach food bank. Your help will make sure pet owners in your  community have safe and reliable access to food for their animals.  Responsibilities  • Repackage and label food for distribution  • Track food supplies going out and prepare for transport  • Maintain the cleanliness of the food area  • Ensure that any damaged or expired pet food is removed  • Coordinate with SPCA staff to understand weekly needs and priorities  • Adhere to all BC SPCA policies  Requirements & Training  • Must be in philosophical harmony with our mission, vision, values, and strategic directions  • Ideally able to comfortably lift/move bags of pet food weighing up to 50 pounds  • Clear & confident communicator  • Knowledge of local BC SPCA initiatives/events  • Works well independently and with a team  • Reliable, committed, and task-oriented  • Time management skills  Volunteering Conditions  • Lifting and Moving: Volunteers may need to lift or move supplies and equipment, which requires physical  strength and stamina. *Speak to us about any modifications needed.  • Safety Protocols: Volunteers must adhere to safety protocols to protect themselves and the animals. This  includes using personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary.  • Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as sharp containers.  Youth Volunteers  • Youth under 12 years of age are not able to volunteer.  • Youth between the ages of 12-15  o Can volunteer only when accompanied and supervised by a parent/guardian (19+ years old) *  • Youth between the ages of 16-18  o Can volunteer with the consent of their guardians*  • Youth volunteering for school requirements:  o depending upon the program requirements and amount of students submitting applications for this  purpose, not all centres will be able to accommodate these requests.  o For more information before submitting an application, contact volunteers@spca.bc.ca to inquire.  Include the location and details of your school program.  Time Commitment  • Approximately 1 hour of online training is required for entry into the volunteer program.  • Attendance to an in-centre orientation and/or tour may be required before starting to volunteer.  • We request a minimum commitment of 6 months with one shift per week.  Benefits of Volunteering  • The intrinsic reward of knowing that you are helping families and pets stay together in your community  • Engagement in a new community with other animal lovers  • Experience for future roles in your field of interest  Questions? BC SPCA Community Ambassador.  Ambassadors connect directly with the community at events such as farmers markets,  adoption fairs, food drives, and other local gatherings. The goal of this role is to raise  awareness about the organization's mission and the importance of animal care. As an  Ambassador, you'll be able to share your passion for animals by highlighting the needs and  issues facing cats, dogs, and other companion animals in your area, while inspiring others to  get involved.  Responsibilities  • Attend community events representing the BC SPCA and connecting with community members and  groups.  • Set up and take down booths at community events when needed.  • Document and take photographs during events.  • Assist with presentations in the community about BC SPCA programs and services and education on  animal care and welfare topics.  ' Distribute promotional material and information to local businesses and community groups.  • Increase community support for the BC SPCA through recruiting members of the community to become  volunteers, fosters, members and/or donors.  • Approach event participants to provide education, encourage conversation, and build positive  connections.  Requirements & Training  • 19 Years of age or older.  • Volunteer Application and Interview.  e Online orientation and on-the-job training provided.  • Flexible commitment with the expectation of attending a minimum of one (1) event per month.  • Ability to work independently or as part of a small team.  • Dependable and committed.  • Strong communication skills, previous training/facilitation experience an asset.  • Comfortable approaching people, asking questions, and initiating conversations.  • Proven success with building and maintaining effective relationships with external audiences.  • Philosophical harmony with our vision, mission, values, and strategic directions.  Volunteering Conditions  • Animal Handling: Working directly with animals may involve low-stress handling, or caring for them,  which requires patience and attention to detail.  ' Potential Hazards: Be aware of potential hazards such as bites or scratches when assisting with adoption  events.  ' Weather Conditions: Outdoor tasks may require working in various weather conditions, including rain, or  heat. Volunteers should dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared for seasonal changes.  ' Standing and Walking*: Many roles may involve long periods of standing or walking, particularly when  interacting with animals or the public. *Contact us about accommodations or modifications.  Time Commitment  • Events attended usually occur in the spring and summer and during weekends.  • Shifts may vary depending on the event and how many volunteers are available.
