BC SPCA - Campbell River

Join our Foster Roster

New foster families are needed to provide safe and loving temporary homes to dogs, cats, rabbits, and other vulnerable animals before they can find, or return to, their forever homes.

The minimum commitment is a six-month period, but foster placements happen on an as-needed basis and range in durations from a few days to a few months. Any help makes a world of difference to the health and wellness of these animals!

Next steps to join the team:

  1. Read the role description and check that you meet all the key requirements below.
  2. Take photos of the spaces your foster animal would have access to in your home and outdoors.
  3. Fill in an application for the foster care role and upload your photos. (You will receive a response to your application within 5 business days)
  4. Complete 1-3 hours of orientation and training online
  5. Meet the BC SPCA foster coordinator by phone, video call, or in person
  6. Continue virtual training in animal care and behaviour while waiting for a placement

Key Requirements:

  • 19+ years of age, or a family with an adult to act as the lead foster
  • Pet-friendly housing including a separate room with a closing door and window
  • Ability to drive animals to vet care appointments
  • Time to spend with your foster animal(s)
  • Interest in learning more about animal behaviour and care

Campbell River - Animal Fostering Volunteer

Foster Guardian

Volunteers with the BC SPCA Foster Care Program are the guardian angels of thousands of injured and abandoned animals received at the branches every year. The foster program benefits animals who have a good chance of adoption, but who are either too young, sick, injured, under socialized or emotionally stressed to survive in the shelter environment.  Instead, animals are cared for and rehabilitated in a nurturing foster home.

  • Provide a suitable home environment for the fostered animal
  • Ability to work independently
  • Dependable and committed
  • Experience working with ill or injured animals
  • 19 years or older

  • Spend quality time with the animal
  • Bring the animal to the Branch or veterinary clinic for regular check ups
  • Submit weekly reports to the Branch regarding the animals progress and care
  • Ensure all other animals in the house are vaccinated

1 week to six months, depending on the reasons for fostering
