APEGA Council Elections

APEGA’s Council is the governing body for our association, and the Government of Alberta looks to Council to provide the necessary oversight to ensure APEGA fulfills its mandate to protect the public. This includes ensuring that APEGA's operations follow the EGP Act, regulations and bylaws, and that we are holding professional members and permit holders accountable for compliance.
Each year, over the course of 30 days, APEGA members have the opportunity to vote for council members through our online portal myAPEGA.
In order to ensure a fair and transparent election process, the Association seeks volunteers to participate in the Election Ballot Counting Committee. Volunteers with this group help verify that all submitted votes are valid and properly counted. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the association and to earn CPD hours.

Nominating Committee
Every year, the APEGA membership elects councillors who provide the organization with strategic leadership, financial oversight, and sound governance. Councillors must have a solid understanding that, first and foremost, APEGA is a regulator, and they must have the competencies required to execute council’s duty to govern and fulfil APEGA’s mandate of protecting and serving both the public interest and public safety. It is the responsibility of the Nominating Committee to receive applications from the diverse population of engineers and geoscientists registered to practice in Alberta, assess those applications, and subsequently ensure the candidates on the ballot are qualified, credible, and broadly reflective of the membership.
What We Do
- Understand and execute the committee work plan for the upcoming election cycle.
- Review and understand the competencies needed for council as a collective.
- Conduct a gap analysis to determine recruitment priorities for the upcoming election cycle.
- Oversee the execution of the recruitment process to receive nominations from the membership at large, ensuring the election slate contains qualified candidates.
- Seek nominations to address specific gaps.
- Assess nominees using a structured, competency-based approach.
- Select candidates to appear on the ballot.
What Has Changed
In 2021, bylaw amendments were approved to enable APEGA to execute a more transparent nomination process to ensure that qualified candidates appear on the ballot. In parallel, APEGA adopted a more transparent and merit-based process for populating the Nominating Committee.
- Nominating Committee members will be recruited by an open call for volunteers.
- A Chair will be appointed from among the Licensed Professional Committee members.
- Committee members, including the Chair, will be selected based on set qualifications.
- No sitting councillor will serve on the Nominating Committee.
What We’re Looking For
- Licensed professionals who understand APEGA’s role as a self-regulating body.
- Individuals with experience in the recruitment and evaluation processes.
Time Commitment
Terms will be up to two years to allow for appropriate staggering of committee member continuity and renewal. The maximum number of years a member can serve on the committee is six years. Terms run from April to January. Meetings are held during business hours and the estimated time commitments are:
- April | Orientation (2–4 hours)
- May | Meeting #1
- August | Meeting #2 (2–4 hours)
- Sept.–Oct. | Assessments and Interviews (20–40 hours)
- Oct. | Meeting #3 (3–5 hours)
- Jan. | Meeting #4 (2–4 hours)

Skills and Qualifications
- Acute understanding of APEGA’s role as a self-regulating body.
- Familiarity with APEGA’s governing structure, strategic direction, key stakeholders, and operating environment, and an understanding of the importance of having a strong governing council.
- Demonstrated commitment to APEGA and interest in supporting it and the professions.
- Experience on other APEGA committees or taskforces is considered an asset.
- Be an APEGA licensed professional member in good standing.
- Must not have been a full or part-time employee of APEGA within the past three years.
- Independence of mind, yet able to work effectively within a committee structure.
- Excellent listening and communication skills.
- Sound judgement, critical thinking, and consensus development skills.
- Committed to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Experience with recruitment and selection, conducting interviews and/or evaluating applications against established criteria is considered an asset.
Duties and Expectations
- Adhere to the Nominating Committee’s principles of fairness, transparency, accountability, and independence.
- Attend and actively participate in committee meetings.
- Review agenda material before each meeting or interview (materials will be available at least one week in advance).
- While honouring the transparency of the nomination process, also respect the confidentiality of nominee information and assessments.
- Review and understand the competencies needed for council as a collective.
- Conduct a gap analysis to determine recruitment priorities for the upcoming election cycle.
- Oversee the execution of the recruitment process to receive nominations from the membership at large, ensuring the election slate contains qualified candidates.
- Seek nominations to address specific gaps.
- Assess nominees using a structured, competency-based approach.
- Select candidates to appear on the ballot.
- Conduct an annual review of the nominations process/cycle in the current year to identify improvement opportunities for future years.
