Environment and Sustainability Volunteering with Ipswich City Council

Council’s Environment and Sustainability team have a range of volunteering opportunities for volunteers who want to share their passion for and knowledge of Ipswich’s unique flora and fauna.

Bush care volunteers

Volunteers in our Bush care Program restore and care for Council reserves and parks which have been identified as high value. Bush care groups are run by dedicated and valued volunteer group leaders and volunteers who are supported by Council staff to forward plan their work so that groups can work at their own pace to achieve agreed outcomes. 

Volunteers in our Bush care program have a passion for caring for Ipswich's unique environment. Many of our volunteers are plant lovers or gardeners - though anyone is welcome!

Ipswich Nature Centre Queens Park

Volunteers at Ipswich Nature Centre (INC) assist the INC staff with the daily operation of the centre including the observation and care of animals, feeding schedules, and cleaning/maintenance of the animal enclosures. A truly unique volunteering opportunity for animal lovers who want a behind the scenes experience. 

This role is one where volunteers are required to do a range of manual tasks (e.g. raking, shoveling, lifting, using a wheelbarrow) and will spend the majority of their shift on their feet and outside. 

It is a requirement of this role to have a QFever vaccination. For more information - please read the Position Description found here. 

 

Environmental Education Centre Volunteers

Volunteers at the Queens Park Environmental Education Centre share their passion for Ipswich and the environment by educating visitors to the centre on Ipswich’s natural environment and how to care for it by promoting behaviour change and awareness. Volunteers assist with weekly educational programs, school visits, environmental activities and events, and general duties for the day-to-day operations of the centre.

The team at Queens Park Environmental Education Centre have a passion for educating others about the environment, sustainability, Ipswich and it's unique Flora and Fauna and what can be done to protect it. Volunteers in this role enjoy providing exceptional customer service and are comfortable chatting with a diverse audience of people. 

It is a requirement of this role to hold/be able to hold a blue card. For more information about the role - please read the Position Description found here. 

 

Environment Event Volunteering 

Keen to volunteer but looking for something adhoc or once off? This could be for you. Our environment event volunteers help out throughout the year at a range of environment and sustainability focused events.

No skills or prior experience needed. Simply come along and share your passion for sustainability and the environment.

Bushcare Groups

Ipswich City Council partners with a variety of groups that aim to conserve, restore and protect natural areas within council boundaries. Whether you'd like to be a weekend warrior or a regular member of a Bushcare group near you, there's lots of great groups to volunteer with in Ipswich. Sounds good? Register your interest here

• Enjoy working with a diverse range of people

• Can make a regular commitment to the group (once a month).

Recruitment Status: Positions Available

How many volunteers are needed? Unlimited, bring your friends!

Pre-Requisites: New volunteers can simply show up on the day to try out the opportunity. All new recruits must sign a waiver form before starting work. These are available on the day. Those wanting to join as a regular group member after volunteering a few times will be given a volunteer induction pack so they can register online and continue supporting the group. Register and regular volunteers are provided with a hat, safety goggles and rip resistance gloves. 

Please wear gloves, a hat and closed in shoes, and bring drinking water and your own snacks. Sunscreen and first aid kits are available.
