City of Surrey - Fire Services
Volunteers who donate their time to the Surrey Fire Service participate in opportunities designed to reduce community risk by delivering life safety messages. Our goal is to educate the public and support their ability to be resilient by knowing more about their risks and what they can do to protect themselves, their family, and their neighbours.
Emergency Preparedness (Ages 18+)
Emergency Preparedness
When large disasters occur, the public needs to be prepared and become self-sufficient during the time it takes government and community services to become operational. Depending on the disaster, services have the potential to be impacted from a few hours to months such as in the event of an earthquake. Volunteers can educate the public on how to prepare themselves and their families during festivals at booths or through presentations.
These events run at any time of year when there is a festival or large gathering or when a member of the public requests a presentation.

Emergency Support Services Level 1 (Ages 18+)
This is a program that provides short-term basic support to people who have been displaced from the home due to a disaster. For level 1, this often occurs during events such as house fires where the resident does not have insurance to cover their losses. ESS provides 3 days of support in the form of housing, food and clothing. Volunteers respond any time of day or night when the event occurs to help people in their worst hour.
These events run at any time of year and any time of day or night when an event occurs that evacuates approximately 1-12 people from their place of residence.

HomeSafe (Ages 18+)
The HomeSafe program reduces public risk of becoming injured in a house fire by educating the public on the importance of having a working smoke alarm. Working smoke alarms have been proven to save lives but are often disconnected or eventually stop working. Volunteers conducting HomeSafe go door to door to remind residents to check the working condition of existing smoke alarms. This program began in 2009 and has been proven to reduce the number of house fires and save lives.
This event runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:30pm and Saturdays from 12:30-3:30.
