About Surrey Art Gallery

The Surrey Art Gallery is the second largest public art gallery in the Metro Vancouver region. Internationally recognized, the Gallery showcases diverse artistic practices, including digital and audio art, by local, national and international artists. Gallery interpretive programs include talks, symposia, demonstrations, workshops and school programs with artists, educators and other specialists.

The Surrey Art Gallery recognizes that our building is situated on the unceded traditional lands of the Salish Peoples including the Katzie, Kwantlen, Musqueam, Semiahmoo, Stó:lō, and Tsawwassen Nations.

Mandate & Goals

Surrey Art Gallery's mission is to engage the public in an ongoing dialogue about issues and ideas that affect our numerous communities, as expressed through contemporary art, and to provide opportunities for the public to interact with artists and the artistic process. It accomplishes these aims through exhibitions, programs, and publications of contemporary art. To meet its mandate, the Surrey Art Gallery also acquires, manages, researches, preserves, and exhibits work from its contemporary art collection, held in trust for present and future citizens of the City of Surrey. The Gallery focuses on contemporary art made since 1975.

The purpose of the Gallery is to facilitate learning about, and understanding and enjoyment of, contemporary art practice. To achieve these goals, the Gallery intends to be:

  • a public forum for conversation about ideas and issues that affect both visual arts and the community at large,
  • a centre for reflection, learning and the sharing of knowledge and experience,
  • a place where, through the medium of art, the community can engage in personal, internal dialogues as well as conversations with others about subjects that affect their lives.

Ambassador Volunteer at Museum of Surrey

Ambassador Volunteer at Museum of Surrey

Want to be part of something BIG? MOS Ambassadors will roam the museum galleries making visitors feel welcome and supported.

What might that look like? You might start your shift handing out maps and asking people how they heard about the museum.  You might direct people to onsite demonstrations or fill them in about a cool upcoming event. Next you might answer a question about the dinosaur exhibit or do a brief survey. While you’re chatting, you will probably ask if the visitor has any suggestions about how we can make their experience even better!

Basically, MOS Ambassadors are the warm welcome to the museum. You’re available if visitors need you and are prepared to work with staff to see how we can improve the visitor experience. You enjoy conversation and smiling.  IF you can speak a second language, that is fabulous. If not, that’s okay too.

We would love to see your smiling face for four hours per month and are happy to train you so you can represent the museum with confidence.

If this describes you, please fill out the application form. For more information, email heritagevolunteers@surrey.ca or call 604-502-6461.

School Program Volunteer at Museum of Surrey

School Program Volunteer at Museum of Surrey

Want to be part of something BIG? School Program volunteers give class tours and deliver pre-written programs to elementary school-aged children.

What might that look like? Well, after setting up the space with museum staff, you will work from reading notes to create an ultra-memorable museum experience complete with real artifacts. You will witness the wonder on tiny faces and chuckle at their fresh observations. After, you will help tidy up the artifacts and chat with museum staff about what went well and how we can make school programs even better.

You don’t need to have teaching experience but a smile, patience and a sense of humour are mandatory. Like the children, you enjoy summer vacation so you’re only available during the school year. You’re comfortable taking a page out of their book to learn the programs… and then deliver them with confidence.

If this describes you, please fill out the application form. For more information, email heritagevolunteers@surrey.ca or call 604-502-6461
